The reasons for this behavior can be summed up by these verses:

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
Proverbs 25:21-22

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Matthew 5:11

Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink:
For in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
Romans 12:20

When you curse us and persecute us, you really bless us.
So we bless you right back, and heap some coals of fire on your head while at it.
Praise Jesus!

I will pray for your poor soul.
May God bless you.

If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: But if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
A foolish woman is clamorous: She is simple, and knoweth nothing.
Proverbs 9:12-13
