Default Day 146. Job 16-18 - 05-14-2008, 08:11 PM

Job 16-18

Today we get:
  • More of Job's bitching
  • Bildad telling Job to shut the hell up and confess!

Job 16

Job said.

2 I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.

Which is somewhat understandable. Imagine you just had a heart attack and were recuperating in the hospital, and instead of getting a "Get Well Soon" card, your three closest friends sent you cards saying "God struck you down for your sin". You'd be kind of upset with them too.

3 Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest?

Job is dead set that he's done nothing wrong, and he's wondering when his three friends will accept that.

4 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.

5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.

Asswage is the olde spelling of "assuage" which means to soothe.

Anyway, Job is saying that if the situation was reversed and it was them that were hurting like he was, he'd be comforting them, instead of accusing.

6 Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased?

Asswage does not mean the price of a booty call!

11 God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.

Job is actually complaining about his friends, but he accidentally said what really happened, with the LORD and Satan's little gamble. The question is, why would an all knowing God need to play the game with the devil? Couldn't the all-powerful God just show the devil the outcome, without all the pain and suffering? Or, God just likes to have people messed with.

20 My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.

Job's in the mood for some new friends, unfortunately, he's not in any condition to go out and meet people.

Job 17

1 My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me.

Job just wants to die. The slow "please God kill me now" emo wasting away.

6 He hath made me also a byword of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret.

He went from parents telling their children "You want to be like Job when you grow up, so eat your spinach" to parents telling their children "You DON'T want to be like Job when you grow up, so eat your spinach."

17-0 ring a bell? New England Patriots fans??? Going into the superbowl it was a boast, when the Giants got through, it was a joke!

14 I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister.

Job must really be hard up. When one considers Denis Rodman to be their mother.

Job 18

Bildad speaks up again. Last time Eliphaz spoke up, tomorrow will Zophar be chiming in again? Were they on a token ring network?

2 How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.

Bildad wonders when Job's talking will end and he'll get around to doing?

8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon a snare.

Bildad makes an allusion to wicked people (Job) being robbed.

9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.

The gin is the rope trap set on the ground that when a person steps on, pulls them up into the air, like on Gilligan's Island.

17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

Job is afraid he'll become the "don't be like Job" guy, Bildad thinks people will forget him all together... you know... like what's his name.

19 He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

Well, that already happened to Job, when his kids all died at the party.

21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

Wow, Bildad had the balls to say Job doesn't know God.

So what have we learned today?

1. Job STILL wants to die.

2. Bildad and the others STILL think it's Job's fault.
