You must have us confused with the salad bar pick-and-choose Joel Osteen cherry picking purpose driven "Christians" of the world, who haven't read their Bibles and who don't know God.
The parts of the Bible that aren't meant to be taken literally are all clearly marked. They are in books with names like "Psalms" or in passages that begin with "And Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying". We take the rest of it literally.

I wouldn't dream of it, friend.
The reason we Bible believing Christian in the United States don't stone adulteresses, homosexuals, and incorrigible children like the Bible says is because it's against secular law to do so, and the Bible requires us to obey secular laws (1 Peter 2:13-15).

The phrase "separation of church and state" appears nowhere in the constitution. That phrase came from a personal letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote, hardly a binding legal document.
The constitution merely says "
Congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religion...". It doesn't say that state legislatures can't do it, or that the President can't sign an executive order that does it.
There are executive orders in effect right now that take public tax dollars and give them directly to religious organizations. Bush enacted them, and Obama intends to expand them.

What do you mean by "the last time the two were intertwined"? There are many places where church and state are intertwined today. Look at Iran. Sure, they are all going to Hell because they pray to the wrong God and they hate Israel, but there's a few things we could learn from them.
