I'm not a science-y woman either, Praise The Lord, so I had to look that up: "the ability of a system to store an electric charge". So does that mean the Atlantic is more like a battery? Would that make any leakage from the Mediterranean into the Atlantic more dangerous, or less so? I am not asking you personally, Sister, obviously. Just trying to get it straight in my own mind.

Thank you, Dr Toole. This explains why my late step-grandmother-in-law Dorothy - affectionately referred to by her fellow Christians as "Mrs Hun" - believed that wall sockets should be switched off when not in use, for fear of spillage. She insisted on this even if there was a plug in the socket, or if you just got up from watching the TV to answer the phone. My husband and I had always assumed it was because she was "
eccentric" (to use the polite term), but it seems that she may have based her actions on sound scientific principles.
