Indie has nothing to do with India.
Indie is short for Independent, referring to how the game developers operate.
Most developers in the gaming industry just make their games, and then their sponsoring publisher (Examples of Game Publishers: Ubisoft, Activision, Electronic Arts) publishes the game under their name.
However, indie developers do not.
Indie developers create their game, and then publish and sell the game themselves. Usually this means either setting up a website selling the game for download, or sometimes contacting digital download services such as Steam (
www.steampowered.com) to sell the game. Indie games do not usually make it into the physical copies that published games do. So, for example, you can't go out and buy Minecraft at Target, or find a copy of BIT.TRIP in a DVD case at the local game shop.
