No, 666 is NOT irrelevant. As for your pastor saying it's "mistranslated", where does he get that? Did he make it up? The Bible clearly states it is 666. How hard is it to screw up a number translation? "Uno is Five and Dos is Twenty-Three Thousand?" Think about it.
