Default Day 81. 1 Samuel 10-12 - 11-25-2007, 04:15 PM

1 Samuel 10-12

Today we get:
  • Saul and the prophets
  • Battle with the Ammonites
  • Samuel's sour grapes

1 Samuel 10

1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

Samuel sure seems nice to Saul while he's in Saul's presence.

2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

Thankfully, the asses have been found.

Samuel then tells Saul he will meet some men on the road, and they will give him some bread. Then they will run into some minstrel prophets, and he will prophesy with them. (We aren't told what he prophesied.)

8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.

Look for my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the east.

9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

PRAISE JESUS!!! When you are chosen by God, he gives you a new heart. One that he can manipulate better. I wonder if God gave Pharaoh a new heart, the one that He hardened all those times back when the Hebe's were in Egypt?

Then Saul meets the prophets.

Then Saul ran into his uncle, and he told him everything that happened... well, except for the whole, I'm gonna be king, part.

16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

Samuel then calls all the tribes together, as he's going to cast lots (even though it's already been determined who the king will be) to find the king.

20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

He then whittled it down to Kish and then to Saul.

But Saul was hiding somewhere.

22 Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.

Wow, that's pretty exact. He's hiding himself in some stuff.

23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

Nice of Samuel to remind us that Saul was tall.

24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

He ain't no human being. There's no future in Israel's dreaming...

Samuel then sends everyone away, and a bunch of men went with Saul.

1 Samuel 11

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Sounds reasonable enough. They didn't really want to fight, so theyoffered to surrender and serve them.

2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

Nahash said he'd accept the surrender, but only if you all pluck out your right eye... um... gross.

3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Exactly why would Nahash agree to this? But apparently he did, the messengers went out, and they found Saul and told him of the demands.

6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

See, the Spirit of God doesn't just make someone all lovey dovey, it can also make someone angered... GREATLY!

7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

That's one way to rally an army. Send chunks of beef around and tell people that if they don't come to fight, that you will chop up their oxen too. (Of course oxen were a great commodity at the time, so the loss of, say, a tractor, would be huge).

8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

300,000 men went to fight, because they feared for their oxen.

The messengers went back to Jabesh, and told them that tomorrow the army would arrive.

So Jabesh sent word to the Ammonites, that they would go out the next day, and then they could pluck out their right eyes.

11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

AIN'T GONNA BE NO EYE PLUCKING TODAY!

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

When you read that, at first it looks like they are saying they don't want a king, but in actuality, they are talking about the people who don't want a king. If anyone said they didn't want a king (namely Saul), then they would kill them.

13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Good king Saul, not letting anyone die for that reason.

15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Praise Jesus, they got a king.

1 Samuel 12

1 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.

Again, Samuel is talking nice, it seems.

2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.

Yeah, but your sons are bad people, remember?

3 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.

It seems Samuel is mourning the passing of his time.

The people all responded that he was a good man.

5 And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

How is it that these people always seem to speak with one voice?

Samuel reminds them of all the things the LORD has done, brought them out of Egypt, and helped them after they remembered Him after they forgot Him.

13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.

He again seems to be turning from rejoicing, to an angry tone.

14 If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:

If you follow God, wait... where's the then? He says If you follow the LORD, then you will continue following the LORD. Where's the promise of good things? I sense a BUT.

15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.

Wow, the BUT sure has a then.

Then Samuel calls thunder and rain on the wheat (it was harvest time).

18 So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

Well, it's probably too late now.

20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;

Just keep following the LORD, and everything will be ok.

23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

Ah, so Samuel won't be going away anytime soon.

What a happy coronation speech.

So what have we learned today?

1. If part of the surrender pact is to pluck out your eye, you might as well fight.
2. Saul was tall.
3. The asses were found, PRAISE JESUS!!!
