Default Day 13. Genesis 37-39 - 09-17-2007, 04:20 PM

Genesis 37-39

Today we get:

Joseph the coat of many colours

Joseph sold into slavery

Judah's boys and daughter in law (ONAN!!!!)

Joseph in Egypt.

Genesis 37.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

Why didn't he love Benjamin the most, as he was the son of his OLDEST age.

4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

Remember, these are the same brothers who just killed an entire town, if they weren't speaking peaceably unto me, I'd be worried.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

Joseph may not be very smart, telling his older murdering brothers things that make them even angrier.

7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

He dreamed that they were out in the field and the brothers wheat bowed down to his wheat. This really ticked off the brothers.

9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

Apparently Joseph doesn't know when to shut up.

10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Well, not his mother, because she just died.

13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.

Israel sends Joseph off to help with the flock.

When the brothers saw him coming, they decided to kill him. It probably wasn't a big deal for most of the brothers.

18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

They decided to kill him and throw him in a pit and claim a wild animal ate him.

21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

Thankfully Reuben, the oldest son, talked them out of killing him.

23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

(the koran says that Joseph was thrown into a well; the bible (KJV1611) CLEARLY states "there was no water in it")

The brothers, pleased with what they did, sit down for lunch, at this point they were just going to leave him there to die. In the distance, they see some Ishmeelites and Judah decides it would be best to sell Joseph into slavery.

26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

In a funny turn of events, some guys from Midian come by, take Joseph out of the well, and sell him to the Ishmeelites for 20 pieces of silver (remember Jesus was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver).

Reuben goes back to the pit to get Joseph for the sale, but he's already gone.

31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

The brothers go back to their father, and show Israel/Jacob the coat.

33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

Joseph winds up in Egypt.

36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.

(Didn't the Midianites already sell him to the Ishmeelites?)

Genesis 38.

2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

Judah (like Jacob) goes on a slight fathering spree.

3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah:

Judah has 3 sons, Er, Onan, and Shelah.

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

Er, wasn't a nice man, so the LORD killed him.

7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

Judah decides that Tamar needs to get pregnant so, he sends Onan to do the job.

8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

In unto

9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

This is how we know that every sperm is sacred. The LORD puts such a high price on man junk, that he killed the son of Judah for spilling it on the ground.

Judah then tells Tamar that she will remain living with him until Sheleh is old enough to marry her, and get her pregnant.

Judah's wife later dies, and he and his buddy go up to the town of Timnath to party/mourn.

Tamar hears about this, so she goes too.

14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

Wait, don't all the muslim women cover their faces? Doesn't that make them harlots?

16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

Judah didn't recognize her, but she knew full well that it was Judah.

He offers her a kid from the flock.

He didn't have it with him, so she takes his signet, bracelets and staff until he brings back the kid.

18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

Tamar then goes back to Judah's house and puts back on her widow garb. Judah sends the kid with his buddy to make the payment, and he didn't find her.

21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

The buddy goes back and says she wasn't there.

24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

(Judah doesn't realize at this point that it was he that slept with Tamar)

25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

Just like Abraham sent away Hagar and Ishmael, it seems Judah turns his back on Tamar and her child.

27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

... make that 2 children...

Genesis 39.

Back to Joseph.

1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

Didn't the Midianites just sell him in Genesis 37:36?

2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

There's a difference between a HOUSE and a FIELD slave. Joseph was definately a FIELD slave. Definately the son of his father. Remember Jacob dwelt in the tents while his brother Esau (the hairy one) was the cunning hunter.

7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

Joseph refused. There's nothing less arousing than the smell of desperation.

12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

She then concots a story that Joseph was coming on to her, and so her husband throws Joseph into jail.

21 But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

Joseph, it seems, can find favour in the eyes of everyone... except his brothers.

22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

Some accounts have Joseph as being in the prison for 10 years. That's pretty much a 10 year vacation for the keeper of the prison.

It almost makes me wonder why the other prisoners didn't conspire to kill Joseph, like his brothers wanted to. Probably because an older/wiser Joseph didn't run around telling the other prisoners that he was having dreams where they would all bow down to him.

That concludes today. So what did we learn?

1. Joseph angered his brothers, who wanted to kill him.
2. They sold him for 20 pieces of silver.
3. Judah had 3 sons. God killed 2 of them.
4. Masturbation is a sin worthy of death.
5. Judah had 2 more sons.
6. Joseph was prosperous in Egypt.
7. Until he got thrown in jail for false charges

Tomorrow, more on Joseph.

Praise Jesus!!!

Does not this proclamation prove Onan to be the premier pornographer? He was willing to go in unto the woman (the widowed wife), but withdrew and wasted his wad on the wheat. The "pulling out" was not captured on film, as the offenders of today strive to do, but somebody was apparently present to document the event in the Bible (KJV1611). This is sufficient to say that even the satirical members of Monty Python were surely succinct when singing "Every Sperm is Sacred."

Thus, it is important to realize the LORD's intentions and refrain from rubbers, reservoir tipped or otherwise. It has been shown that His dogma would have us do the deed uninhibited from doubt and device. Even and especially when laying with your late brother's lady.

Further, the spilled seed story that Brother V has laid out for us reminds me of a bit of the (questionable) Catholic mass. The entire Catholic congregation is coerced into chanting:

"Blessed is he who COMES in the name of the LORD. Hoes on ya in the highest"

Or something similar. They seem at least to have read their KJV up to this point and know you shouldn't strive to sleep with anyone unless the LORD makes His presence known. PRAISE JESUS!

In Adam Clarke's commentary for verse 7, he points out that the Hebrew word for wicked is Er's name spelled backwards.

ויהי ער בכור יהודה רע בעיני יהוה וימתהו יהוה׃
ער - Er
רע - Wicked

You have to wonder what Judah was thinking when he named his kid ער, if he even was thinking at all.

Canaanites are Negros. Judah knew a nigra?

This is ok?
