Default Day 37. Leviticus 22-24 - 10-11-2007, 05:45 PM

Leviticus 22-24

Today we get:
  • Priest dietary laws
  • Priests
  • Feasts Feasts Feasts
  • Dude gets stoned, dude, stoned, dude...

Leviticus 22

3 Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.

So who was the "them"?

Not just anyone could be a priest.

The priests were called Kohanim. These were specifically, descendants of Aaron. In order to be a Kohanim the person would have to be a Levite, a jew, and a direct descendant of Aaron.

Levite status is passed down from the father's side. Jewish status is passed from the mother's side. So a child who's father was a Levite, but who's mother was something else other than a jew, would not be considered Jewish. Therefore, he could not be a Kohanim (even though he might be a direct descendant of Aaron).

All these priestly Leviticus laws deal with the Kohanim. They were the ones who would look for leprosy, they were the ones who would perform the sacrifices, and bless the people.

4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a running issue; he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead, or a man whose seed goeth from him;

Any of the Kohanim who were lepers, or had issues, couldn't eat the sacrificial food. They couldn't tough unclean things (verse 5); and they can't touch dead things (verse 8). If they do, they need to clean themselves with water, and wait until the even.

The Kohanim didn't do any work other than the tentbernacle, so they took holy food home with them to feed their families.

10 There shall no stranger eat of the holy thing: a sojourner of the priest, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.

11 But if the priest buy any soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.

The Kohanim's hired servants couldn't eat of the offerings, but the Kohanim's slaves could.

His daughter while married couldn't but if she is divorced or widowed, she can again.

God once again reiterates that the sacrifice must be good.

22 Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD.

Livestock must be good, as must the meat offerings and firstfruits.

24 Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land.

And, just in case you forgot.

33 That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you brought them out of Egypt.

Leviticus 23

Feasts!!!

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

Sabbath

3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

Passover

5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD's passover.

Unleavened Bread

6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

Day of Atonement/ Yom Kippur

27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Tabernacles/ Sukkot/Booths

34 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

It seems the Jews have a holiday for most everything. From Harvest, to spring, to new years, to just living in a tent for a week.

43 That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Just in case you forgot that God brought them out of Egypt.

Leviticus 24

2 Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.

5 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

One for each tribe.

9 And it shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute.

The Konahim get a lot of unleavened bread and animal to eat.

Now for the stoning story.

10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp;

So these two guys were fighting.

11 And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan

look, another emote...

So they locked him up, and waited to hear from God what to do.

God said:

14 Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

By laying hands on his head, they transferred back the blasphemy to him. Similar to the way the scapegoat received the sin in yesterday's reading.

15 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin.

16 And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.

Anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD, Jew OR stranger, will be stoned.

Additionally, Moses throws out some more laws.

If you kill a man, you get put to death (verse 17).

If you kill an animal, you must replace it (verse 18).

If you hurt someone else, they get to hurt you back (verse 19).

20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

Eye for an eye, even though Jesus later said "turn the other cheek".

22 Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.

One law for everyone. Don't blaspheme God, and even reparations, it sounds fair.

23 And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.

YAY, they killed him!

So what have we learned today:

1. Most of the sacrificial laws in Leviticus are only for the Konahim. These laws are no longer (somewhat) important, as there is no Temple.

2. If you blaspheme the name of God, you should be stoned. Wouldn't it be great if we could stone anyone who blasphemes Jesus Christ's Holy name? You'd never hear anyone yell His name again! Oh if only we could.

3. The Jews have a lot of Holidays (holy-days). The ones set forth in Leviticus 23 are specifically set dates by God Himself. Passover, Booths, Firstfruits, and the Day of Atonement.

4. An eye for an eye, is known as retributive justice. The punishment fits the crime. It is a helpful law, for both victims AND the criminal. It prevents excessive punishment, and also serves as a warning to the criminal. If you have to do the time; don't regret the crime.

Jews fail at feasts. They fail at feasting really, really badly.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.
