Mouth cancer increase in young linked to oral sex

Rising rates of mouth cancer in young people are strongly linked to oral sex, new figures show.

Oral cancer cases have risen above 6,000 a year for the first time and experts believe it may be due to rising rates of infection by the human papilloma virus (HPV).


Oral sex could now rival heavy smoking and drinking as a cause of oral cancer.


Two thirds of the 6,200 cases diagnosed in Britain in 2011 were men. Experts say men are more likely to smoke and drink heavily, both significant risk factors in oral cancer.

There were particularly sharp rises in rates of cancers at the base of the tongue (an almost 90 per cent increase) and the tonsils (a 70 per cent increase).

They are two areas of the mouth where cancers are more commonly HPV-related.


Just a few strains cause problems, but one in particular, HPV-16, is known to cause cell changes which could develop into cancer.

‘We have seen a rapid increase in the number of HPV16-positive cases of oral cancer,’ said Richard Shaw of Cancer Research UK.


‘We have also noticed that patients with HPV-related oral cancers tend to be younger, are less likely to be smokers and have better outcomes from treatment than those whose tumours show no evidence of HPV.


Actress Jaime Winstone last year led a campaign urging young people to be aware of oral sex’s link to cancer and make sure they take the HPV vaccine or get checked by dentists.


About 80 per cent of Britons will contract HPV at some point but the virus is usually harmless.

Oral sex does not cause cancer. HPV causes cancer. And it doesn't only cause oral cancer. It is also the leading cause of cervical cancer and many other types. So, should women stop having sex because HPV causes cervical cancer? No. You should do your own research and not use data to serve and manipulate your one sided opinion of people that have oral sex. You're ignorant and really have no idea what you're talking about. There is such a thing called science and your false God has nothing to do with it. And to add to my above post: If YOU did real research, you would know that over 80 percent of people that walk this earth will carry HPV at some point in their life. Typically, the human immune system will kill off the infection. In many cases, if not treated, the disease will turn in to cancer.

So, stop your crap.

And the only way that the HPV virus can get to the back of the tongue is through oral sex. So oral sex causes cancer. If you have a point you are failing to make it.

Amen Brother, and thanks for this exciting new report. I'm not at all surprised that Jesus is busy giving mouth cancer to all these British men. The place is 90% fag and the rest and limp-wristed pansies with no chins and no balls.
