Default Day 172. Psalm 86-90 - 12-03-2008, 10:28 PM

Psalm 86-90

Psalm 86

1 Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.

Sounds like this is gonna be another one of those whiney psalms.

2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

Sounds a little boastful.

5For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

Sounds like a child talking to a parent before the child is going to get a spanking. Dad, remember how merciful you are... especially during this, my time of need... of mercy.

7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

Psalmists seem to have MANY days of trouble.

8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

Today we get lower case gods, and interestingly, this chapter has Lord written both LORD and Lord. Does this Lord reference someone other than THE LORD?

12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

Nope, it's the same LORD.

Psalm 87

2 The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

This is a jab at the rest of Israel, sent directly from the Jerusalem. Remember, the two sides separated after the death of Solomon. This psalm was probably written shortly after the division. Dwellings of Jacob (Israel) would mean the north.

5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.

The psalmist is not just a racist, he's also pseudo anti-semetic, since he believes his Judah born jews are better than the others.

Psalm 88

1 O lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:

Wow, a completely lowercase lord. that's something you very rarely see. "Lord" is used 6667 times in the Bible (KJV1611) The first time (lowercase) lord is used is Genesis 18:12 when Sarah was talking to Abraham. The next time, it's not in reference to God. Normally a lowercase lord, refers to a "lord of the land" or just a person in a position of authority, to say "lord God" just stuns me.

3 For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.

The psalmist is so full of troubles, that he didn't capitalize LORD.

10 Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.

Dead men don't praise Jesus. Is basically what this guy is saying. This is a man afraid of death, who wants the LORD's healing.

Psalm 89

Psalm 89 was written by Ethan, the Ezrahite. Ethan and Herman (from Psalm 88) was during the time of Solomon.

1 I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

For ever? Does that include the time in the Achterhuis?

3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

Remember, the current king of Israel is a direct descendant of David. It's been this way since people started recording history. It will be that way for the rest of time.

12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

Is Hermon still BJ's security force partner? I thought he was replaced by Paul.

BJ, can you clear up what happened to Hermon.

13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.

Does God have a week arm? Or is just the one impressively mighty? One arm doesn't have to be weak to consider the other strong, it's just the one is stronger.

22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

The psalmist, is oblivious to what is about to happen.

27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

David is very humble and meek... NOT!

29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

Again, remember the current king of Israel.

30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; ...

33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

Ethan = oblivious

34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

Speaking for God, unless you are a (the) prophet, just isn't that great of an idea.

It seems verses 38 on, may have been added later.

39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

The covenant wasn't broken by God, it was broken by rebellious people. God just didn't feel like keeping the FOREVER covenant, with people who also didn't want to keep it.

Psalm 90

Psalm 90 is normally attributed to Moses.

1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

The people resided there, even in Egypt. Note the capitalization of Lord.

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

If a thousand years are as a day, then is God in complete control of everything at all times, or did He set everything up to run correctly without His divine supervision? I mean, there's only so much that I can accomplish in a day, but I can't imagine a thousand years passing by like it was just a day, but then, when you are REALLY busy, and in control of everything, time really flies. It's a lot of work, especially when you consider that God hasn't taken a day off since Day 7.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

There are 6.6 billion people today, and God knows all their secret sins. He knows all of them from a day, and for a thousand years, which seem like a day.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

People apparently lived to be 70. Even though, most people only lived about half that long. Even up to 1800-192 AD, the lifespan was only 40.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

Remember Moses had a stuttering problem, so this eloquent psalm was probably really hard for him to pen.

So what have we learned today.

1. The modern Israel king is a direct descendant of David, and that is in accordance with the covenant that God made with David that said his throne would be established forever. As God knows everything that will happen in the future, he made that covenant in full faith with David.

2. Ethan likes to switch from past to the future, real quick.

3. Bobby Joe and Hermon, fighting crime since 1400 BC!

Judges 9:21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

A problem with translating the Old Testament from Hebrew to English is that English only has one word for Lord. Each variation in capitalization scheme represents a different Hebrew word. LORD (YHVH) is God's name, Lord (Adonay) is God's title, and lord (Adony) is a man's title.

That was a mistake on Bible Gateway's part. Psalm 88:1 in my KJV has LORD rather than lord.

Pastor Billy-Reuben

Upon request I will cite scripture for all these facts in God's Holy Word.

✝ This is a Christian community and we worship GOD of the Holy bible, the only Living GOD. We worship Jesus Christ, Son of GOD and Savior. Anything else is absurd. ✝

Pastor Billy-Reuben
It seems to be different in the online versions, and the KJV has it as lower case.

http://kingjbible.com/psalms/88.htm

Although NETBible has a good reference on the actual wordings.

It seems that LORD should be Jehovah.

Thank you for helping to clear this up pastor.
