"Devil Dog": Woman Burned, Hanged Dog Who Chewed Bible, Say S.C. Police

COLUMBIA, S.C. (CBS/AP) A Spartanburg County woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty, accused of hanging her nephew's pit bull with an electrical cord and burning its body after the dog chewed on her Bible, authorities said Monday.

When questioned by police and animal control officers, Miriam Smith told them the female dog named "Diamond" was a "devil dog" and she feared it might harm neighborhood children, according to an incident report from the county's Environmental Enforcement Department.

Smith, 65, was arrested Sunday and remains in the Spartanburg County jail. Bond had not been set.

She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted.

Authorities said the 1-year-old dog was kept outside on a chain and chewed the Bible that had been left on Smith's porch. The dog's remains were found under a pile of dried, cut grass. Part of the orange cord was still around the dog's neck and a smell of kerosene still hung in the air, the animal control officer wrote in her report.

The dog was killed about two weeks ago when Smith's nephew was forced to spend several days away from home because of winter weather in the area, authorities said.

Smith is the first person is Spartanburg County to face a felony charge under South Carolina's tougher animal cruelty law, said Jaime Nelson, director of the county's Environmental Enforcement Department.

Smith's mental state will likely affect what kind of penalties she faces, Nelson added. He said he was stunned by how flat the woman's emotions sounded as she recounted on tape what happened to the dog.

"She just acted like - what's done has been done," Nelson said.

Well if the lady's a Christian it would be a KJV Authorized Version. It's the one TRUE word of God, and doesn't deserve to be chewed by a dog.

I don't know why the authorities are being so ruff on her. They are barking mad if they think this is abnormal for South Carolina. Being born and raised in South Carolina, I can attest to the God-fearing nature of its population. While this tends to happen more during the dog-days of summer when the heat tends to attract Satan's attention, it CAN happen any time. The police should spend more time sniffing out sinners rather than putting a leash on this Godly action. I really have a bone to pick with them!

I'm sure if she was Vietnamese and barbecuing the dog for dinner the ACLU would be suing for discrimination and she'd have a new reality television show in the works.

But since this is a Christian martyr, she must suffer.

It is not easy to be a persecuted minority. She will be rewarded by God in Heaven, unless she is not a True Christian of course.

I don't understand why people make such a big deal out of killing a dog. It's just property. Besides, there's no mention in this story about how much trouble this dog must have been causing before it chewed the Bible. The Bible might have just been the last straw.

Side note: More evidence that she is a good Christians woman, she met her husband during a nativity play. He was playing a German shepherd who received the message from the host of Angels.

Personally I would've called for GOD to send two she-bears out of the woods to maul the dog as it had mauled the Bible, but giving the critter a taste of the flames of hell is an effective method as well.

I hope she took video of the burning carcass to show her nephew just where he is going if he doesn't get his life straightened out.

I think this shows how rotten America is becoming. It is terrible for me to see such rot: while her (a good Christian woman), attempts to keep Satan at bay are glossed over. Coming face to face with a devil dog would make anyone hot under the collar.

I feel so sorry for her: when she realised the mutt was possessed she must have been in sheer terrier. I would not be surprised if she was not a little melancollie, after her ordeal.
