Default Day 72. Judges 7-9 - 11-15-2007, 08:25 PM

Judges 7-9

Today we get:
  • More on Gideon
  • Abimelech
Judges 7

When we last left Gideon, he was getting God to soak, then leave dry the fleece.

1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

Why are they calling him Jerubbaal?

2 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

God said, get rid of most of the people, because even though you will win, the people will be able to take the credit, and not give the credit to God.

So Gideon asked if anyone was afraid, and he let 22,000 people go home.

God said, that the remaining 10,000 people was still to many, so we'll have to get rid of some of them, too.

4 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

If a guy scoops up water and drinks from his hands, he can stay, if he sucks it straight from the river, he can go.

7 And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

Gideon started with 32,000 people. He let 22,000 people go because they were scared. He let 9,700 people go because they drank water on their knees.

9 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.

10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:

God said go... but if you are afraid, take Phurah. Surely Gideon wasn't scared.

11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.

Nope, he was yellow.

While there, Gideon and Phurah hear two watchmen talking, one is telling the other about a dream he had. Something about a loaf of bread goes rolling into a tent and it falls down. The other guy interprets the dream.

14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.

How a loaf of barley bread is representative of Gideon, is beyond me. How the tent falling down means they will all die is also, rather odd.

Gideon takes the remaining 300 people and gives them trumpets and a torch that is in a pitcher. He tells the people "Now do what I do, and say what I say. And make me proud." Who cried when old yeller got shot in the end?

19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.

20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

Black guys, help the white guys.

22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.

So the Midianites killed each other, PRAISE JESUS!!!

25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

As well they should.

Judges 8

1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

Ephraim was upset that they didn't get to be there for the killing.

4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

They were hungry from chasing the Midianite horde.

5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

The people of Succoth refused. Gideon said, when he was done with Zebah and Zalmunna, he was coming back to Succoth... You just made the list!

8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

You just made the list!

10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

The 300 people scared 120,000 people into killing each other (well, God scared them) only 15,000 remained. 105,000 people killed each other.

12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

So they caught Z and Z, and killed them all. Praise JESUS!!!

He then goes back and teaches Succoth a lesson. And tears down the tower in Penuel, and killed the men in the city.

22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

Gideon saved them from Midian.

23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

Yeah, like that'll last a long time.

24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Damn that Ophrah!

30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

Wow, at least 70 sons, that's impressive. Thank goodness Israel only had 12 and not 70, otherwise there'd be that many more people turning their back on God. Israel went into Egypt with 70 people, if it were Gideon, he's already a generation ahead, there'd be about 12 million jews coming out of Egypt.

32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

I wonder how long it took for them to stop following God?

33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

His body probably wasn't even cold before they put up an idol of Baal.

Judges 9

Abimelech, judge number 6, son of Gideon's concubine.

1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

Basically, he asks his brothers to follow him.

Apparently, he didn't like their answer.

5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

So he killed them all except for Jotham, who was hiding.

6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

So Abimelech was the first Hebrew King.

Jotham then has a long speech about how the people wanted a king, and instead of getting a good king, they got a crappy king.

21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

It's never a good idea to run away from your problems, especially if you are going to drown your sorrows in alcohol.

23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

This is the first reference to an evil spirit from God in the bible (KJV1611) it won't be the last.

25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

Stage coach robbers!

Zebul sends a message to Abimelech.

31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

Abimelech and his men, went and hid away from Shechem. Gaal went out and saw them and warned everyone.

45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

When you really want to destroy a place, you sow it with salt... then NOTHING can grow!

47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

So Abimelech goes to a tree, cuts down a bough, and has everyone else do it too.

49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

ATF versus David Koresh.

51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

I wonder if they tried to burn them out too?

52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

Yep.

But a lady threw a chunk of rock that hit Abimelech in the head, and he was mortally wounded. But he didn't want to have it that a WOMAN killed him, so he had his servant kill him.

54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

We might see this happening again in the future.

So, what have we learned today?

1. It's better to be killed by your own people than to be killed by a woman.
2. If you are going to make someone king, make sure it's a tree, and not a bramble bush.
3. Towers aren't a good place to have as your last stand.

It's a good thing the interpreters of dreams in the Bible don't resemble modern Joos such as Sigmund Freud. Otherwise the fellow would probably have replied that the loaf of barley bread represented his mother, and the tent falling down represented the entire Iranian army spilling their seed onto her face. Not pleasant.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

That's the nickname/surname Gideon earned yesterday when he destroyed Baal's altar. Jerubbaal means he who strives with Baal. Remember that his first name means destroyer, so his full name, Gideon Jerubaal, means guy who's going to kick Baal's butt.

The content of the dream could have been anything -- the dream itself didn't matter. The Midianites were so terrified of Gideon that whatever the dream was about, they would have interpreted it to mean that Gideon is coming to kill us all. That's what God wanted Gideon to hear.
