Default Day 112. 1 Chronicles 7-9 - 01-24-2008, 05:57 PM

1 Chronicles 7-9

Today we get:
  • Sons of Issachar
  • Sons of Benjamin
  • Sons of Naphtali
  • Sons of Manasseh
  • Sons of Ephriam
  • Sons of Asher

1 Chronicles 7

1 Now the sons of Issachar were, Tola, and Puah, Jashub, and Shimrom, four.

Issachar's boys were: Tola, Puah, Jashub; and Shimrom.

6 The sons of Benjamin; Bela, and Becher, and Jediael, three.

Benjamin's boys were: Bela; Becher and Jediael.

13 The sons of Naphtali; Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah.

Naphtali's boys were: Jahziel; Guni (the sarge); Jezer; and Shallum.

14 The sons of Manasseh; Ashriel, whom she bare: (but his concubine the Aramitess bare Machir the father of Gilead:

Manasseh had two boys Ashriel and Machir. You'll remember the story of the Daughters of Zelophehad, the ones that Moses allowed to get property, they come from Manasseh's line.

20 And the sons of Ephraim; Shuthelah, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eladah his son, and Tahath his son,

Ephriam's sons were: Shuthelah; Bered; Tahath; Eladah; Tahath; Zabad; Shuthelah; Ezer; Elead; Beriah; Rephah; Resheph; Telah; Tahan; Laadan; Ammihud; Elishama; Non; and Jehoshuah.

His first 9 boys were killed by someone taking their cattle. Then he had 10 more boys. and didn't name any of them after their dead brothers (even though there were 2 Shuthelah's and two Tahath's before).

30 The sons of Asher; Imnah, and Isuah, and Ishuai, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.

Asher's sons were: Imnah, Isuah, Ishuai; Beriah.

So why did Asher name one of his boys Beriah? Ephriam named his son that "because it went evil with his house". Why did Asher need to name his son after an evil thing?

1 Chronicles 8

1 Now Benjamin begat Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, and Aharah the third,

2 Nohah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth.

Wait? Didn't we just see that Benjamin's boys were Bela, and Becher, and Jediael. Now it says Bela (the same) Ashbel, Aharah, Nohah and Rapha?

Wait, it gets confusing-er.

6 And these are the sons of Ehud: these are the heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Geba, and they removed them to Manahath:

Who was Ehud's father?

1 Chronicles 7:10 The sons also of Jediael; Bilhan: and the sons of Bilhan; Jeush, and Benjamin, and Ehud, and Chenaanah, and Zethan, and Tharshish, and Ahishahar.

Ehud's father was Bilhan, the son of Jediael. Who isn't mentioned in the 1 Chronicles 8:1-2 list of Benjamin's sons.

(Ehud was the left handed judge with the knife strapped to his leg; who had the "message for the king".)

Unless this is an Ehud other than the judge Ehud, who was the son of Gera. Judges 3:15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Ehud, the son of Gera.

7 And Naaman, and Ahiah, and Gera, he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud.

Wait, the 1 Chronicles Ehud is the FATHER of Gera. So they must be two different people.

33 And Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

Well, now we get down to the first king. Saul.

Saul<Kish<Ner

Wait, where the heck did Ner come from?

1 Samuel 9:1 Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

Oh, crap in 1 Samuel we see it as Saul<Kish<Abiel<Zeror<Bechorath<Aphiah. Outside of Saul and Kish, NONE of those names are present.

In today's reading, Ner just sort of pops out of nowhere.

1 Chronicles 9

1 So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.

Well, not really ALL Israel, since we don't have genealogies of Gad and Zebulun.

3 And in Jerusalem dwelt of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and Manasseh;

Judah kind of big brother-ly watched over Benjamin, Ephriam and Manasseh.

33 And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.

Does a free person REALLY have to work day and night? Is that really freedom?

39 And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

Wait, didn't I just read that?

Saul>Kish>Ner.

42 And Ahaz begat Jarah; and Jarah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza;

Ahaz was the grandson of Jonathan (the son of Saul).

1 Chronicles 8:36 And Ahaz begat Jehoadah; and Jehoadah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza,

Ahaz (still the grandson of Jonathan) now has a son named Jehoadah (not Jarah) who begats Alemeth; Azmaveth and Zimri.

And that ends today's reading; so what have we learned?

1. It's no wonder the New Testament tells us repeatedly to not worry about Genealogies, they make no sense.
2. Ehud was either the son of Gera, or his father, or oddly was a different guy who was important enough to get his name in the book.
3. Ner might be Abiel; or he might not be.

Judges 9:21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
