Default Day 70. Judges 1-3 - 11-14-2007, 06:01 PM

Judges 1-3

We now start into the book of Judges. This book is a listing and their exploits of the Great Judges of the people is Israel, following the time of Joshua.

The people we'll get to meet during this time are:

* Othniel
* Ehud (great judge)
* Shamgar
* Deborah (great judge)
* Gideon (great judge)
* Tola
* Jair
* Jephthah (great judge)
* Ibzan
* Elon
* Abdon
* Samson (great judge)

During this time, we'll really get to see how horrible the people were. There will be a recurring theme. The people will turn their back on God, He'll send a judge to save them, they will worship for a while, then turn their back on him again... wet, lather, rinse, repeat.

Judges 1

The book starts out with a recap of Joshua. In case you didn't see the original movie, they provide a nice summary of events in the begging of the sequel.

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

God sends Judah, who asks Simeon for help. Funny how here, the tribes are represented as individuals where as earlier, they were all -ites.

4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

Damn those Canaanites, and the Perizzites!

6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

That's an interesting punishment. One that you don't normally see. It's (I think) the first time that we've heard of someone being big-toe and thumb removed. (He died later)

8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Then they killed more people.

12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

Yes, we've heard the story, his nephew does it, and she lighted off her ass, remember?

14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

See, they wouldn't let us forget.

19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

If they couldn't drive out chariots of iron back in (roughly) the 14th century BC, what chance would they have against a modern tank?

21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

And they are making them pay tribute. (Don't kill me money)

There follows a list of all the cities that they didn't drive the people out of, in direct conflict with Moses rule that they should kill them all, because if they don't the people will probably start serving other gods, and marry other women.

Judges 2

1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

That's right, if you make a league, God won't drive them out, if you don't God will.

7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.

It's really easy to worship God when you know all the things he's done. That's not faith, that's not belief, that's KNOWLEDGE. When God goes into hiding, it takes belief. Israel, has none.

10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

So, the elders just didn't bother to tell their kids about God.

12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.

That's a BIG no-no.

14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Did you see that, the LORD delivered them to the hands of the bad people. It wasn't the devil, it wasn't themselves, God MADE the bad people spoil them.

16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

Ok, let's look at the role of the judges. They weren't guys in black robes with the white hair. They weren't the guys who sit in court all day. These guys were ASS KICKERS!!! (Like judge dred). They were not above the LAW! They were the law! These guys would lead armies. They were the leaders of the tribe. They were un-annointed KINGS! They were the person who the tribes rallied behind. They were the ones who did the LORD's work, and got them back on track to worship God. These men were not cream puffs (like Joel Osteen) they were not homos (like Ted Haggard) these men kicked ass for Jesus (like Chuck Norris!)

18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

The JU-D-GES HECK YEAH! Gonna save the day from the mother-heckin bad guys! The Ju-D-GES HECK YEAH!

19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Wow, after each judge, the people would be even worse than before.

Judges 3

1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

Philistines, Canaanites, Sidonians, and the Hivites.

5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

Weren't they commanded to not do that... SEVERAL TIMES!?!?

8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

8 years of captivity under Mesopotamia.

9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

Judge one is the son of Kenaz, the nephew of Caleb. He's married to Achsah, so he's not a bachelor, sorry ladies.

10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

There was peace for 40 years... then he died.

12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

So God was angry, so He actually make the Moab king strong, He was that pissed.

14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

18 years under Moab rule... ladies, meet judge 2.

15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Ehud, of the tribe of Benjamin. He's lefthanded.

So the people of Israel send the king a gift, Ehud goes to deliver it.

16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

Normally, they would only frisk a person on the left leg, because that's where a NORMAL RIGHT HANDED person would hide a weapon.

17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

Wow, he must be fat for the bible (KJV1611) to actually say, "a very fat man".

18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

So the hebe's left. Then Ehud says he has to tell the king a secret, so the king sends away his people.

20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

Oh, king, I have a message from God for you!

21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

Here's your message, a cubit long double blade!

22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

Uh, eeeew. He shoved the knife in so far that the kings blubber absorbed it... then he pooped himself.

Ehud leaves, locks the door behind him, and goes home.

The kings servants didn't know what was going on, so they let the king be for a while, until they were worried, so they got a key, opened the door, and BEHOLD, he was dead. PRAISE JESUS!!!

27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

They all went down to the city...

29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

Judge 3, Shamgar, he kill 600 Philistines with a long stick with a pointy tip.

So what have we learned today?

1. When you turn your back on God, he will send an ass kicker to kill your enemies. (Is that part of why the jews rejected Jesus?)
2. Lefthanded people make better assassins.
3. If you let your enemies live, you will probably wind up worshipping their idols (tolerance) and marrying their women (racial equality).

Judges 3:13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

This is why God commanded the Israelites to remember the Amalekites, and not to forget to blot out the memory of them. They must have forgotten!

What some readers might want to know is why are those people still in the promised land to begin with.

In Joshua 3:10, the Lord promised to "without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites." Even the Canaanites' iron chariots weren't going to pose any problem (Joshua 17:18), because the Lord was with the Israelites.

Then we see in Judges 3:5, that the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, and Jebusites were not driven out. Only the Girgashites are gone. Remember, this was the only tribe on God's list who didn't join the Axis of Evil in Joshua 9:1.

What the heck happened? In Joshua 11:23, we learned that "Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses". In Joshua 21:45, we learned that every good thing that the LORD promised to Israel came to pass. In Joshua 24:11, we learned that God did, in fact, deliver "the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites" into Israel's hand, just like He promised.

Except for the one Hivite city that that tricked Joshua into a peace deal, a small band of Jebusites living in part of Jerusalem, and a handful of Canaanite cities living under tribute, these people were all wiped out at the end of the book of Joshua. It was done. They won. How are these tribes back in such force now? Why are the Canaanites' iron chariots such a big deal now, when they didn't matter before?

Some atheist punk who reads the Bible as if it were fiction might compare the beginning of Judges to the beginning of a cheesy movie sequel. The good guys' victory at the end of the previous movie is revised to be less complete, and the bad guys that we thought were dead survived somehow and they are back -- stronger than before. The tribes of Israel are less cohesive, and the Canaanites went from having a handful of cities under tribute to controlling a huge swath of Palestine, and their iron chariots are now a huge threat.

However, this hypothetical skeptic simply missed Judges 3:1-2.

Judges 3:1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
Judges 3:2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

The new generation of Israelites did not know war. The LORD brought those tribes back and strengthened them greatly, to prove Israel and teach them war. The LORD is a man of war (Exodus 15:3) -- you can't know God if you don't know war. Praise Jesus!

Default Re: Biblical Periodic Table of Elements - 03-03-2008, 11:26 PM

Does anyone know why exactly Our Lord had such difficulty dealing with those iron chariots?

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

J'g:1:18: Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
J'g:1:19: And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

I firstly will admit that my historical and military knowledge is not all it should be, my speciality lies in Godly scientific matters. All I can scientifically add is the iron is 9.2 times heavier than gopher-wood per cubic cubit.

Nevertheless, as Faith in the Word of God has never prevented me from forming a Godly theory:

(I see a possibility that a reading of the above might suggest that the Lord was with Judah when he went to the mountains but Judah was on his own when he went to the valley. However, Judah was doing God’s Work and could reasonably have expected some support.)

Usually, chariots do not provide much trouble to the Lord (e.g. the Red Sea episode) so why should they here?

The answer may lie in the method used for fighting chariots on the battlefield. You would fight them with other chariots and, should the enemy break through in numbers, as they neared the lines, the infantry would then take over.

The normal chariot was constructed of light wood for speed and manoeuvrability. This would be useful on most ground. The disadvantage was that it was susceptible to damage, particularly around the areas of the axel and wheels. Once so damaged, the charioteer was a dead man. Thus this was the part of the chariot that Judah’s charioteers would concentrate upon. Heavy blows to the wheels, poles of gopher-wood stuck through the spokes, burning arrows, and the classic wheel to wheel stuff, etc.

However, we are now looking at the enemy possessing chariots of iron. Now the enemy is down in the valley – on flat ground. The valley is narrow (most valleys are) so the question of manoeuvrability and the speed of the horses isn’t so critical. But the weight of the chariots still remains critical – a horse has only so much energy, so there is a question of how far and how long an iron chariot can be pulled.

Judah sends his charioteers forwards. Traditionally they would trot for the most of the way and then charge when the two sides of chariots were within, say ¼ mile of each other. The idea is to draw the chariots of the valley people. The people of the valley wait… Judah’s chariots move nearer… they are now at that point between the enemy and their own ranks where retreat is not an option. Judah does not understand why the enemy’s chariots have not advanced and charged. There is a small diversionary attack to Judah’s left flank. As Judah deals with this, his chariots have now moved too close and the chariots of the valley begin their charge.

Judah’s chariots respond but all their swiftness is of no effect, they bounce off the enemy’s chariots in pieces. Judah’s charioteers are destroyed as the infantry of the people of the valley charges.

At this stage, all Judah can do is wait for the arrival of the enemy chariots; chariots that are impervious to the skill of the infantry.

The losses are too great, Judah retreats.

The question is why did God not intervene. Look a little further down the verses:

J'g:1:27: Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
J'g:1:28: And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
J'g:1:29: Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
J'g:1:30: Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
J'g:1:31: Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

We see that the Lord of Hosts was with Manasseh, Ephraim, Zebulun, and Asher yet they did not drive out the various people.

In His Wisdom and Mercy, The Lord had called time on the slaying, which had pleased Him greatly, and had decided tribute was the thing. The question of the iron chariots had therefore caused the Lord to change the battle plan.

Why did He not just organize a slaughter and then continue with the new plan? Well, that’s like asking why He didn’t start the battle with air-strikes and heavy artillery – the Lord keeps to the methods of the time and an earthquake, flood or fire would have caught Judah and his men and a plague is a bit slow.

Thank you for exercising my gray matter – I have been talking with Mrs Bathfire for most of the day about the evils of selling doves and this was a pleasant interlude.

An excellent question, given that it would appear from the text that God could not drive out the lowlanders who had chariots of iron:

And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. Judges 1:19

However, it is very clear that God could drive out iron charioteers when he chose to do so:

And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron.... And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet. Judges 4:13-16

What are we to make of this seeming discrepancy? The answer, I believe, comes in a closer reading of Judges 1:19. The "he" referred to there was obviously Judah, not God. So, although God was with Judah, and helped Judah to drive out the mountain men, God chose not to help Judah drive out the valley residents, as Brother Bathfire has so eloquently stated.

I believe God did this to show the Jews that they were nothing without Him. Unfortunately, the Jews back then, just like the Jews today, often turned away from God's message of hope in their singleminded quest for world domination. So, even after this warning, the Jews turned to idol worship, and God was so frustrated that He sold the whole lot of them into slavery in Judges 2:14. Even that didn't straighten the Jews out, so, despite constantly raising Judges to redeem them from slavery, God had to sell them again in Judges 4:2, Judges 3:8, and Judges 10:7.

This leaves open the question of how God discomfited the iron chariots in Judges 4. This is just speculation on my part, and not Bible truth or Landover doctrine, but I suspect that God built Himself a giant electromagnet.

Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name.... Jeremiah 10:25
