Default Trusting GOD in the storm: Lessons from the Life of Job - 04-30-2009, 04:06 PM

Does life have you down and out? Feeling like nothing is going your way? Maybe you're a new Christian and you are wondering if GOD really cares or not.

Take heart, for your apparent misfortunes and pain may actually be a sign that GOD has given satan permission to do all kinds of horrific things to you while The LORD sits on His White Throne of Judgment watching with bemused curiosity to see if you will lose your faith!

See, you're feeling better already!

I invite you to come with me on an exciting and uplifting adventure into the Old Testament to study the amazing but completely true story of Job, a man who was copiously blessed by GOD, but who soon became the subject of a wager between The Almighty and satan! What happened next? Let's start at the beginning:

1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

We learn from the first three verses of his book that Job was the wealthiest and greatest man of the east. He had a happy family and all the camels you could ask for!

6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Proud of His loyal servant, GOD attracts satan's attention to Job:

8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Being an evil and childish devil, satan has the nerve to be unimpressed by GOD's wonderful servant:

9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

In the above verse satan is accusing GOD of favoritism, and simply isolating Job from all misfortune so that he could have everything he wanted.

11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

GOD told satan that he could do whatever he wanted to Job's family, as long as he didn't actually hurt Job directly. This is fair, because GOD didn't want to lose one of His best servants, only to see how much emotional agony it would take to get Job to lose faith.

13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

In a single day, Job lost his livestock and his children and heard the news all at once. Did he doubt GOD? Let's find out:

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

Job still retained his beautiful, childlike faith in GOD's plan for his life! PRAISE GOD!

In chapter 2:

1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

2 And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

The devil tries to outwit GOD:

4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

Finally GOD consents to satan's childish game and gives him permission to torture Job physically.

7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

Being a weakminded female, Job's wife encourages him to spit in the face of GOD:

9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

The above verse shows us that Job understood that it is GOD's perogative to give us good things and then stand back while it is all taken away and replaced with pain and suffering. PRAISE GOD!

Next chapter:

1 After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

Notice Job cursed his DAY, not his GOD!

2 And Job spake, and said,

3 Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

Job essentially wills that he had never been born.

4 Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

5 Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

6 As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

7 Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

8 Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

9 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

10 Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

These are serious words. Job wonders why he couldn't have died at birth and been spared the horrifying agony that he is now experiencing. He wills that he be erased from history, that it should be like he never lived. But notice that he never once questions GOD or asks where the LORD has been during this constant stream of bad luck that couldn't have happened by chance! Now that's what I call faith! PRAISE GOD!

In the meantime, Job's friends have come to comfort him, and they do so for a few chapters. We shall skip ahead to chapter 42 to see what ultimately happened to Job:

12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

As a reward for his faith, Job is given even more livestock than he had before!

13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.

Job's sons and daugthers are replaced, with even better children than he had the first time I'm sure!

14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.

15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

17 So Job died, being old and full of days.

There you have the abridged story of Job and his life.

Job had the kind of faith that you and I should aspire to have. The kind of faith that can stare tragedy and pain in the face and say, "I will not blame the Almighty for allowing bad things to happen to me to prove to satan that I will not doubt."

GOD is allknowing, He knew the kind of faith that Job had. But because GOD is fair, He allowed satan to test Job's faith because satan wasn't so sure. (This was not sadistic or inconsiderate because GOD was planning on replacing Job's property and family the whole time, so don't even go there, GOD-haters!)

I hope this story has given each of you a little bit more faith in our loving GOD of wisdom and justice!

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Godly lesson for these dark days friend. Clearly God is only testing our faith the gay marriage and this Obamification of taxation with representation.

Time to reclaim our FREEDOM from the “Mullah in Chief” and his growing activist voter hoards of socialists, communists, anti-Semites, anti-Christians, atheists, radical gays and lesbians, feminists, illegal immigrants, Muslims, anti-Anglo whites and others.
