NEW ORLEANS - A federal judge says Tangipahoa Parish public schools must stop in-school Bible giveaways to students.

"Distribution of Bibles is a religious activity without a secular purpose" and amounts to school board promotion of Christianity, U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier ruled.

As requested by both sides, Barbier made a summary judgment based only on the written briefs - something judges may do only if the law is absolutely clear.

But attorney Christopher M. Moody said he thinks the Tangipahoa Parish School Board is likely to ask the 5th U.S. Court of Appeal to overturn Barbier's decision, though he hadn't yet consulted with the board. "We think there's a very good chance" of a reversal, he said.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana filed the suit for an anonymous family whose daughter said she felt pressured into taking a Bible even though she doesn't believe in God. The girl was called Jane Roe and her father John Roe out of fear of retaliation by schoolmates and neighbors, the ACLU has said.

"Jane Roe states that she accepted the Bible because if she did not, her classmates would have 'picked on' her," Barbier wrote. "She feared they would call her 'devil worshipper.'"

Marjorie R. Esman, executive director of the ACLU chapter, said, "A child shouldn't have to choose between her family's beliefs and the wishes of school administrators."

Taking it didn't make her feel comfortable - it just made her less likely to be teased for not being Christian.
There is no good reason for Bibles to be handed out at public schools. Religion is not part of the curriculum. Teach your kids your religion at home.
I was brought up Christian, and every December, the Gideons would come to our school and hand out pocket-sized New Testaments. Even when I was a Christian, I thought this was inappropriate.
And while taking one may be "voluntary," I know that at the school I went to, students were "strongly encouraged" by adults to take one, whether they wanted it or not.

Public libraries have copies - you cna check one out and it doesn't cost anything.

• Student doing report on 10 commandments.

Wht would a student in a secular school be doing a report on the 10 Commandments?

Again, why would students in a secular school be doing reports on characters from the Bible?

• Literature class.

The Bible is seldom taught as literature in public schools, and if it were, the school would provide copies in class of the specific texts the students were studying, not hand out Bibles to the whole student body.

• History class.

The Bible is not an accurate source for a history class.

The 10 Commandments are in the Bible (Exodus chapters 20 and 34; Deuteronomy chapter 5). The papists twisted the 10 Commandments by merging the 1st and 2nd Commandments (so that people would overlook that little bit about idolatry) and splitting the 10th Commandment so that there would still be 10. This is only more evidence that the disagreement between Christians and the so-called "freedom to believe in Satan" clause of the US Constitution IS TOTAL WAR!

Christian Conservatives -- that is, True Christians™ -- will never rest until the only viewpoint taught in schools is our viewpoint.

Christian theology makes absolute claims: there is one God. He is the only God. There is one path to salvation: the Christian God. There is one Truth: the Truth of Jesus the Christ. There is no alternative.

The secularist laws of the United States tell a different story. They say other paths are possible, other belief systems -- or no belief system -- are equally valuable. These laws cannot be reconciled with Christianity. Not on the deepest, most fundamental level.

In the end, one system must yield.

How can these two ever really be reconciled? Either God's Word is true, and He created the universe in 6 days, or the earth evolved over billions of years. They can't BOTH be true!

Either we have eternal souls that will live in Glory praising and servicing Jesus (or, like Allllllie's, burn in the torturous fires of God's Hell), or we have eternal souls that are reincarnated ad infinitum until we are perfected, as the Hindus believe. They can't BOTH be true!

Religious doctrine should not be taught, advertised, hinted at, or pushed upon anyone attending public schools - which means people shouldn't be handing out pamphlets, Bibles, or even so much as a scrap of paper with "Jesus" written on it. The exception is when the student is taking a World Religions class, in which case, the teacher should not in anyway display favouritism towards, disdain for, or personal opinion about any religion they teach.

Silly ALLLLLLLLie. The PUBLIC school is paid for by the CHRISTIAN taxpayers! Therefore, they (through the school board they elect) decide the curriculum.
