Prominent Republican: Women Need To Be Paid Less So They Can Find Husbands

On Sunday, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) sought to advance the GOP’s rebranding effort among female voters by suggesting that Republicans have long “led the fight for women’s equality.” The statement came just days after Republicans voted down the Paycheck Fairness Act and sought to downplay the problem of equal pay for equal work by suggesting that Democrats were using the issue to distract from Obamacare.

Now three days later, a prominent member of the Republican movement further undermined the party’s campaign to appeal to women voters by suggesting that the current pay gap isn’t wide enough. In an op-ed published by the Christian Post, Phyllis Schlafly — the founder of the Eagle Forum — maintained that increasing the pay gap will help women find suitable husbands:

Another fact is the influence of hypergamy, which means that women typically choose a mate (husband or boyfriend) who earns more than she does. Men don’t have the same preference for a higher-earning mate.

While women prefer to HAVE a higher-earning partner, men generally prefer to BE the higher-earning partner in a relationship. This simple but profound difference between the sexes has powerful consequences for the so-called pay gap.

Suppose the pay gap between men and women were magically eliminated. If that happened, simple arithmetic suggests that half of women would be unable to find what they regard as a suitable mate.

Obviously, I’m not saying women won’t date or marry a lower-earning men, only that they probably prefer not to. If a higher-earning man is not available, many women are more likely not to marry at all. [...]

The best way to improve economic prospects for women is to improve job prospects for the men in their lives, even if that means increasing the so-called pay gap.

Schlafly has long been crusader for “traditional values” within conservative movement and the Republican party, serving as a member of the National GOP Platform Committee as recently as 2012 and as a delegate to the National Convention. Her Eagle Forum PAC has also donated thousands to prominent Republicans like Eric Cantor, Michele Bachmann, Steve King, and Ted Cruz.

Since losing the presidential election in 2012, Republicans have repeatedly tried to enhance the GOP’s appeal beyond its traditional white male voting base. In 2013, the Republican National Committee published a widely discussed “autopsy,” promising to “addresses concerns that are on women’s minds in order to let them know we are fighting for them,” and held training sessions advising candidates to simply avoid talking about rape. Schlafly’s comments appear to undermine that effort.

Who cares what the liberal joos who run the media think? God Bless Phyllis Schlafly's husband, for telling her what to say and training her so well to say it. I wish more of the ladies around Freehold would model themselves after her.

Phyllis is really lucky to have such a husband. His leadership in her life has made her a world class celebrity.


She is so correct about lower wages for women helping them find marriage. There is nothing quite so appealing to a young man as a helpless and needy young woman.

I can testify to the truth of this. My wife passed away almost a year ago, and though I started looking right away I am still single. This can only be because women are paid too much. I support a maximum wage law for women. This would help me find a new wife and make the lesbians reconsider their lifestyle as well.

I'm not so sure that God meant for women to be paid at all. All Adam was looking for was a little help, and the Bible (KJV1611) says nothing about paying the cattle, beasts of burden, or the fowl. Since Adam could not find a suitable helper amongst the animals, God did him a favor by creating a woman helper, but the Bible (KJV1611) says nothing about having to pay her (of all things).

I say we have gone far enough in accommodating their yapping and complaining by giving them an allowance.

What's next? Equal pay for Negroes? I'm glad the Republicans put a stop to this nonsense. Jesus very clearly told us that equal pay for equal work is a sin in Matthew 20:1-16.

Tell me about it. I can't believe these women want to be paid such outrageous rates for doing such lousy jobs. Some websites even argue that women should be PAID just for the work they are supposed to do at home!

10. CEO: And stay at home moms are always on the job, right? Like when they're sitting on the couch watching Teletubbies with their 2 year old, that's them doing their job as "CEOs". I've lived on my own and managed my own affairs and I don't pretend to be the CEO of anything.

9. Laundry Machine Operator: Wow, she learned how to load her own clothes into a washer and press the on button! Give her $20,000 for that!

8. Psychologist: She could be a drunk drug addict, and have no degree, but we're supposed to believe she can do the job of a trained Psychologist and that she should get paid what a Psychologist gets paid?

7. Janitor: I live alone and I clean up after myself. Should I be getting paid to do that? Most of the messes are probably caused by the woman screwing up the meals and spilling food everywhere in the first place.

A Honey Do list??? Any man who uses a wife's "Honey Do" list for anything other than toilet paper should be admitted to the nearest mental facility. Everyone knows it is the man who repairs objects, and delegates tasks.

Remember husbands, next time you order your wife around, you should expect her to PAY you for the generous "Facilities Manager" service you are giving her.

This is just so absurd I can't even go on. Why don't women go out in the real world and apply for all these "jobs" that they're supposedly qualified for? Go up to a major company and say "Yeah, I'd like to apply for CEO or Psychologist. My qualifications? I took care of my 3 year old at home." See how far that gets them.

Don't these job titles all sound like the type of jobs that grown men living in their mother's basements until their 40 would create for themselves. "Uh.. I'm not unemployed. I'm the.. washing machine operator, and the uh.. thermostat operator, and the uh.. van car driver, and the computer operator! and the uh... facilities manager.. yeah, I manage the facilities."
