This is all a piece of superstitious nonsense. The idea behind it is that if God ends your life before 'real' Baptism, you can delude yourself into thinking that dear little Frank or Jane has gone to heaven. This deception comforts the weak of faith; usually the parents.
The truth of the matter is that unless you can understand the covenant you make between yourself and God during Baptism, you are not baptized.
Hell is filled with dead infants, get over it.

According to research as found HERE:
Quote:
Luther was the most widely read author of his generation, and he acquired the status of a prophet within Germany. According to the prevailing view among historians, his anti-Jewish rhetoric contributed significantly to the development of antisemitism in Germany, and in the 1930s and 1940s provided an "ideal underpinning" for the National Socialists' attacks on Jews. Reinhold Lewin writes that "whoever wrote against the Jews for whatever reason believed he had the right to justify himself by triumphantly referring to Luther." According to Michael, just about every anti-Jewish book printed in the Third Reich contained references to and quotations from Luther.

It's a good thing we have Sportzgrl333's assurance that " we don't practice it anymore. I'm guessing we changed that sometime."
"Anymore" and "sometime" must mean after 1945.
1st Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1st Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1st Corinthians 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

Anywho, can someone explain this to my sad humble soul. Thank you.

Dear Seeker: I typed a really long response to your question, and then I lost it! There's a common misunderstanding that Lutherans are close or equal to Roman Catholics -- not true! Really, really short version: I think the reasons for the confusion are, 1.) We look similar - clergy vestments, liturgical worship, etc.; and
2.) We practice Communion with unleavened bread and real wine (the way that Christ instituted it). We do not believe in transubstantiation (that the bread and wine are the actual literal body and blood of Christ) or consubstantiation (that the bread and wine are only bread and wine, nothing else). We simply take Christ at His Word, when he gave the meal to us Christians to eat and drink. This is the conflict that other Christian church bodies have with Lutherans. I happen to be a member of The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod. We believe that Scripture is the inspired Word of God, without error and that Scripture does not contradict itself. Rather, Scripture interprets Scripture. We believe in the Triune God: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We believe that Heaven and Hell are real places. Jesus condemns unrepentant sin, loves the sinner, and hates the sin. He gave his life freely for our salvation -- was concieved by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, died as the sacrifice for our sin, was buried three days, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven, where he is preparing a place for us. We do not pray to Mary or the saints as Roman Catholics do. We believe that we cannot come to Christ by our own reason or understanding -- rather, it is the Holy Spirit who works faith in us through the spoken and written Word of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ -- and that God doesn't need any help from us in our salvation. Jesus did it all! It's personal - and it's FOR YOU! That's the really short version of what makes Lutherans different from Romans.

Uh huh, and do you follow everything that is commanded to us in Holy Writ?
I've seen Lutheran womenfolk in pantsuits tha I KNOW were made from fabric blends, missy! And I have known Lutherans who engaged in pre-martial sex and who were divorced-- and who are still accepted members of their church congregations.
What have you to say about that?

Please make a thread of your own in the " Introductions" section of the forum, so that we can properly greet you. Tell us about yourself, your church, and how you came to find Jesus.
And if you're here to flame us, better take a look at THIS before making an even bigger ass out of yourself.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:

Nothing but Hell for reading, believing, and following the very Word of God?
Hello, my name is Mary. I hope to fellowship with you! That is, unless you don't listen to church authority (Deuteronomy 17:12); are a witch (Exodus 22:17); are a homosexual (Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:24-32); or fortuneteller (Leviticus 20:27) or a snotty kid who hits their dad (Exodus 21:15); or curses their parents (Proverbs 20:20; Leviticus 20:9); an adulterer (Leviticus 20:10); a non-Christian (Exodus 22:19; Deuteronomy 13:7-12; Deuteronomy 17:2-5;Romans 1:24-32); an atheist (2 Chronicles 15:12-13); or false prophet (Zechariah 13:3); from the town of one who worships another, false god (Deuteronomy 13:13-19); were a non-virgin bride (Deuteronomy 22:20-21); or blasphemer (Leviticus 24:10-16), as God calls for your execution and will no doubt send you to Hell, and I have no interest developing a friendship with the Spiritually Walking Dead.

I'm a devout lutheran and I am not afraid to say it. I'm also not a kid. None of you understand the meaning of gods word, and none of you understand that all real christians, (not this baptist shit) will go to heaven as long as they believe that jesus is their saviour and died on the cross for their sins, and the fact of the triune god. I'm not going to go into detail but read Luthers Catechism if you want to learn about my religion. OH, and Catholics are going to heaven too

Why read a man's foolish and sinful attempt to correct God, rather than reading the actual Holy Word of God?
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 7:21
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it;
and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them:
and they were judged every man according to their works.
Revelation 20:13
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
Revelation 22:12
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 12:36-7
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels;
and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Matthew 16:27
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life;
and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
John 5:29
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
James 2:21
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ;
that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
2 Corinthians 5:10
