Default Day 115. 1 Chronicles 16-18 - 01-28-2008, 08:28 PM

1 Chronicles 16-18

Today we get:
  • David psings a psalms
  • David wants to build a temple
  • God promises David
  • David smites areas and gets pizaid!

1 Chronicles 16

1 So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.

The ark has finally made it to Jerusalem!

2 And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.

Offering offerings is the best way to give givings to the LORD; he also likes it when you sacrifice sacrifices; and tithe tithes. Whether they be burnt, peace, sin or any other form of offerings, when you offer them, it makes the LORD happy that they've been offered.

3 And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.

I don't believe he gave away any gubment cheese.

7 Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

I'm sure Michal was probably angry that David sang a song to the LORD; she doesn't seem to like many of the things he's doing these days.

8 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

I think this song was in 3/4 time; I can't get the feel for it being 4/4.

12 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

Here David wants you to remember the good things the LORD has done.

25 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.

AND GREATLY TO BE PRAISED!

30 Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.

When everyone fears the LORD correctly (like us) then the world will be at peace.

34 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

Well, at least as long as everyone worships him it does.

36 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD.

Wouldn't it be great if the joos managed to maintain their fervor for the LORD? Wouldn't it be great if they managed to not have Jeroboam be king, and they never lost their land? Wouldn't it be great if they really destroyed the Amalekites, Moabites, and all the rest; and that we didn't have to hear about Palestinians? Alas; it's not great.

43 And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.

Apparently when the people got to their house, they promptly forgot about the LORD.

1 Chronicles 17

1 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains.

David said; Why do I live in a house and God lives in a tent? Nathan said; go ahead and build God a house. Then God said to Nathan; I don't want a house, I've never had one, I don't want one now!

David's like, but I really want to build you a house, why not? God said; Because I've always lived in a tent.

5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

That's the OCD in God coming out. He's been happy living in a tent up to now; so why would He want to change?

9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,

Compare that verse to the end of 2 Kings. God said his people "shall be moved no more". Then the tribes of Israel were taken to Syria; the tribes of Judah were taken to Assyria. God didn't seem to keep his word; or He changed His divine mind.

11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.

When David is gone, his son will build the house. God will establish his throne for ever. Forever apparently goes from Solomon to Zedekiah. Zedekiah's reign ended in roughly 586 B.C. Solomon's rule started in about 1000 B.C. To God, for ever means just over 400 years.

13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:

God is making empty promises to David.

14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.

For ever just doesn't mean what it used to.

David then starts thanking the LORD and carrying on like a brown nosing suck up.

19 O LORD, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.

David apparently doesn't realize that it's only going to be for about 20 of his generations, that will be king (being forever).

23 Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.

Well God, if that's what you REALLY want; to make my family be king of Israel for the rest of time; I guess I'll have to accept. But only if it's what you REALLY want? It is; ok great!

1 Chronicles 18

1 Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines.

Philistines... smoted by David.

2 And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became David's servants, and brought gifts.

Moabites... smoted by David.

3 And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates.

Zobahites... smoted by David.

5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

Syrians... smoted by David.

11 Them also king David dedicated unto the LORD, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

David filled the tent with all kinds of gold and silver.

14 So David reigned over all Israel, and executed judgment and justice among all his people.

Are judgment and justice two different things?

So what have we learned today (nothing new, what have we RE-learned today)?

1. God didn't want a house, God never lived in a house (unless you count Obededom's house; Dagon's house; and Abinidab's house) God never lived in HIS OWN house. He did have some flat-mates and rented a room, but he didn't have a place of his own. You know, like when you have to get permission to paint a room; you don't have to do that when it's your own house. Maybe God just didn't want to have to mow His own yard? He liked having a landlord, someone to complain to when the hot water heater wasn't working or the fridge just stopped.
2. Forever in the time of David apparently means 20 generations or about 400-500 years.
3. David was a cheerleader for the LORD. He'd sing; dance; and be rah rah for God. If God asked him to wear His letterman's jacket; David would have gushed like a school girl.
