Default Day 177. Psalms 111-115 - 07-02-2009, 04:28 PM

Psalms 111-115

Psalms 111

1 Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.

Sounds a lot like Landover, the assembly of the upright.

4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.

Many people today, complain that the LORD is acting sort of hands-offish. Here we see his works are to be remembered. If he's not being active, we should still remember everything he's done, like making the earth and the heavens... you know... creating everything.

7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.

8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

Remember, God's commandments stand for ever! Jesus didn't do away with them, Jesus fulfilled them, (even though it may appear that he chose to not follow some of them).

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

When we get into proverbs, we will see more about the fear of the LORD, and wisdom. You read it here first though, Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.

It was paraphrased in Job 28:28 ...the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom... it is wise to fear the LORD, but there is more wisdom that one can get after fearing him.

Psalm 112

1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

A wise man will be blessed.

2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

Think back to the documentary Idiocracy, the "smart" couple had no children, but the man who feared the LORD, had many offspring. I was reminded of Israel, and his 2 wives and 2 mistresses producing those wonderful 12 boys (and Dinah).

5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

Just like David did.

8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.

Again, I'm reminded of David and Bathsheba and Uriah the Hittite.

Psalm 113

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.

Not that we're ever told the name of the LORD exactly, but you can pick one of the many names he goes by to praise.

3 From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised.

Whatever it is...

5 Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,

Well, since there is nothing else that created everything, I guess there's nothing like unto the LORD.

7 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;

Exactly how needy does a person have to be to really be in a pile of shit?

9 He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.

At first that just sounds rude, making a woman who can't have kids keep a house, but then you realize that it means she will have kids... so she wasn't really barren, she was just impatient.

Psalm 114

1 When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;

2 Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.

Remember, back to Kings and Chronicles, that Judah and Israel were two separate countries, after the rule of David.

7 Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;

Like on Dec. 26 2004, tremble friggin earth!

Psalm 115

1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

The righteous don't ask for glory, to GOD be the glory! We just bask in reflected glory!

2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?

Like I said before, he's there, he's just being kind of hands off right now. Remember when people blame "mother nature" for events... that's really God. Why do you think insurance policies don't cover "acts of God" unless you pay extra for it? Because God is really unpredictable.

3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

That God, he just does whatever he wants.

4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

Our God made that silver and gold. Heathens worship things man made, unlike our God who wasn't made by man; unlike that Allah fella.

5 They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:

6 They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:

7 They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

How does one find God? By talking to him, seeing him, hearing him, smelling him, feeling him, walking to him, and... um... speaking to him again.

13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

Wisdom and blessings for being terrified of the LORD. PRAISE JESUS, or he'll kick your ass. Remember, being scared shitless of God is the beginning of wisdom. He's worse than Freddie and Jason... combined.

18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.

One had better damn well praise him, or he'll kick your ass. Hence, the need for fear. If you fear him, you'll praise him, mostly just to keep him happy, so he doesn't body check you into the wall when you aren't looking.

So what have we learned today?

1. God's commandments are everlasting.

2. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.

3. God will make previously barren women become birthing machines.
