Default Day 221. Isaiah 61-63 - 11-02-2009, 08:42 PM

Isaiah 61-63

Isaiah 61

1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

This chapter is Isaiah (second or third) telling the people that everything will be awesome when they return back to their homeland.

4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

It's going to take a little bit of work to rebuild the place, but it will be great.

5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

Because they were oppressed for those few years, (remember the Babylonian captivity lasted from roughly 597 BC until the people were given permission to return in 538 BC) when they get back, they are going to be able to make others do their bidding. Oddly, as huge an event as they make the Babylonian captivity to be, it was only 59 years at the longest.

6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

The people are now being promised that they will be the kings. What happened in that time?

7 For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

If you think about the history of the jews, they gave up on God at the drop of a hat. In the wilderness when He was leading them, they abandoned Him. When they had him residing in the tent-bernacle, they abandoned Him. It's odd that in the 50 years of captivity, that they suddenly started to really love God. Ah, I get it, it's because he was taken away from them by someone else that they wanted God. Reverse psychology.

11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

Of course, the 40,000 that came back were probably the ones who still remembered the LORD. The ones who were happy worshiping... um... some other god, probably didn't come back.

Isaiah 62

1 For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.

Here, the current Isaiah is talking about the reclamation of Jerusalem.

4 Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

Hephzibah means "my delight is in her". Beulah means "married woman". Thankfully, whoever translated verse 4, told us that. In fact, they told us twice. In fact, they told us twice.

8 The LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:

Corn means seed. This verse deals with the reclamation of Israel/Jerusalem by the people at the end of the captivity. As you read it, try to not remember all the other people who have conquered the land. Remember that this verse says "surely, I will no more". Which sounds like a pretty long time. But it's God who makes the promise, so He'll probably change his mind sometime in the future. Several times.

11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

The people are coming back, they are never going to leave again. Nothing will beat them, no country will overthrow them, they will reign forever.

12 And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

Now, that would all be horrible prophecy, if it was dealing with the imminent return of the people in 538. But it's not, because it hasn't come true yet. And since Isaiah is a prophet, that means all his prophecies have to be true, so that means this prophecy is for sometime in the future.

Isaiah 63

1 Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Isaiah see's the LORD coming.

2 Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

He looks to see the LORD, and he's wearing a red outfit. He wonders why?

3 I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.

God was preparing the home of his people, he was doing that be wiping out most of the others that still lived there.

4 For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

God's people are going home. God had to evict the current residents so he could house the ones he really wanted there.

6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

7 I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

Verses 6 and 7 of Isaiah 63 truly show the bi-polar nature of the LORD. Verse 6, in mine anger, in my fury; verse 7, the lovingkindness, great goodness, mercies.

10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

So, up until now, this deals with pretty much the history of Israel. From the time that the people got there, through the years of the kings, to the rebellion and being taken away. All in 10 verses.

11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

Ah yes, the days of Moses, when God was right there... and the people rebelled anyway.

12 That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name?

Oddly, this Isaiah doesn't seem to remember the parts in Exodus where the people rebelled, and were swallowed up by the earth. He just remembers the story of God holding their hands as he led them through the desert.

Isaiah is asking God to be with the people now, like he was with them before.

17 O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants' sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

Isaiah knows, that anything bad that happens comes from the LORD. That the people were predisposed to err, because God made them that way.

19 We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.

So, God isn't for the gentiles just yet.

So what have we learned today?

1. God goes from being furious and wrathful to lovingkindness and mercy in a sentence.

2. God's clothes are red from trampling the bodies of people, just like they were grapes and he was making wine.

3. The people were in exile for a whopping 59 years, during this time their numbers went from several million to 40,000. The Assyrian Captivity of the Northern Kingdom was so much better than the Babylonian Captivity.

Default Re: Day 221. Isaiah 61-63 - 11-02-2009, 11:56 PM

Glad to discover this subforum and I'm going back to the beginning and do this one day at a time to truly appreciate the verses. The five times I've read the Bible through since I was saved last year, I did it in less than a month each time. Time to slow down and fully appreciate The Word of God. Thank you Brother 5.
