Default Day 21. Exodus 13-15 - 09-25-2007, 04:17 PM

Exodus 13-15

Today we get:
  • More on Passover rules; leaven
  • God as compass
  • The chase
  • Some of the wilderness

Exodus 13

2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

God is demanding.

3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.

He didn't mention that the reason they were there was because God made the 7 year famine, back during Joseph's day. He didn't mention that God kept them there for a little longer just so He could show off some tricks. The LORD works in mysterious ways.

6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.

Why? Why unleavened bread? What is significant about leaven?

According to Easton's, leaven is:

Quote:
the remnant of dough from the preceding baking which had fermented and become acid.
So why is that significant.

Remember, yeast wasn't truly discovered until 1857, by Louis Pasteur. So if they couldn't add a packet of yeast to their bread, how did they get their bread to rise?

Normally, they would save some of the previous days bread which would already have yeast in it; sort of like sourdough bread. So where did THAT yeast initially come from? That would have been wild yeast in the air. (Similar to the process that the Belgians use to make Lambic beers.) Spontaneous fermentation. The problem with spontaneous fermentation is it exposes the product to be fermented to everything else in the air. Additionally, fermentation/leavening is a process of decomposing.

During the passover, God didn't want anything contaminated or decomposing, therefore, He proclaimed, no leaven!

To claim that the reason for no leaven is because the Jews were in a hurry is just silly. The current Jewish rule for making Matzo (unleavened bread) is that the bread has to be cooked within 18-22 minutes of water coming into contact with flour, to prevent any fermenting. Think back to what we read, and Brother Temperance commented on yesterday.

Exodus 12:35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

They had time to go borrow jewels, gold, silver and clothes from the Egyptians, but they didn't have time to allow their bread to rise? Thus, the "in a hurry" reason makes no sense.

The other common excuse is that unleavened bread would be easier to carry on a long journey. When Joseph took Jacob back to Canaan, he didn't pack matzo for the same trip. It's only 264 miles from Cairo to Jerusalem. At a moderate walking pace, covering 20 miles a day, it's only a 13 day trip. The sons of Jacob didn't pack matzo for that trip.

Therefore, impurity is the only logical reason to not allow leaven.

9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD's law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.

The strong hand that killed the firstborn.

12 That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD's.

My name ... is... NEO!

17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

As mentioned before, it's only about 260 miles away.

18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

The Red sea is really out of the way if you are going from Egypt to Israel.

19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.

They kept their promise to Joseph, that's nice.

21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

So, the could walk all day and night, if they only covered a mile an hour, they would reach Jerusalem in 264 hours, roughly 11 days.

Exodus 14

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.

So, they didn't walk night and day, they made a camp by the Red sea.

3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.

4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.

So, God made Pharaoh want to follow them. God sure did like to harden Pharaoh's heart.

8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.

Pharaoh comes near the camp, and the children of Israel complain that Pharaoh will kill them all, and that it was better for them to be servants and alive in Egypt, than to be dead in the wilderness. Thankfully, LORD's pillar prevents them from attacking.

16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

The Egyptians followed, to slow them down, God shot out the tires of the chariots.

25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

God drowned them all, Praise JESUS!!! So far, God has killed all the firstborn of Egypt, and then killed most of Pharaoh's army. PRAISE JESUS!!!

31 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

I wonder how long this will last?

Exodus 15

The children of Israel recount the events of the Red sea with a song.

1 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Then Moses sister leads the women in a dance.

20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

PRAISE JESUS, in song and dance!!!

22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.

Surely the LORD will provide.

23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.

24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

The people believing in Moses lasted a whole 3 days.

25 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

I'm not sure what kind of tree makes bitter water sweet.

They continue walking and come to an oasis with 12 wells and 70 trees.

Thus ends today's readings. So what have we learned?

1. Leaven is bad.

2. God kills EVEN MORE Egyptians.

3. God likes to make his people meander.

PRAISE JESUS

Thus ends today's readings. So what have we learned?

1. Leaven is bad.

2. God kills EVEN MORE Egyptians.

3. God likes to make his people meander.
4. When God kills heathens, it makes His followers so happy that they sing and dance about it. The whole of Exodus 15:1-21 is just describing Moses singing and Miriam dancing about how happy they are that the ragheads are dead. Is this a feature of modern USO shows, and if not, why not?

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.
