Exodus 28

2 And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.

Form AND Function!

4 And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.

Minister unto me? Why does God need ministering? Friends, I think we may have just discovered the problem with all those feel-good preachers. They minister to the people, telling them what to do, how to feel, what to think; originally, the priests (Aaron) ministered to the LORD, not to the people!

Aaron's breastplate:

15 And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shalt thou make it.

16 Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof.

17 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row.

18 And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.

19 And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.

20 And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.

I've got some rep points to give to whoever can name (without looking it up) the children of Israel.

40 And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty.


Bonnets are for sons, not for daughters!

42 And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach:

43 And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him.

Remember, the altar had to be on flat ground, so God wouldn't look up the skirt of the person making the sacrifice. Now, to make sure that He doesn't accidentally look up a robe, He's requiring linen breeches (underpants).

Exodus 29

1 And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest's office: Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish,

And bread, obviously unleavened bread.

11 And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Pour the blood by the altar; burn the fat on the altar; burn the flesh, skin and dung outside; that is the SIN offering.

16 And thou shalt slay the ram, and thou shalt take his blood, and sprinkle it round about upon the altar.

Cut it up, wash it, burn it.

18 And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Praise Jesus, for His Holy BBQ!

20 Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.

Then put anointing oil on them, then sprinkle them with some of the blood around the altar.

Later Aaron and his boys get to eat the ram and bread, and what ever is left over, has to be burned, no doggie bags!

If they do this, God will live with them forever.

45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.

46 And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.

He keeps reminding them that He brought them out of Egypt. He doesn't seem to be continually reminding them that He's leading them (somewhat) aimlessly through the wilderness.

Exodus 30

1 And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it.

Cover it in gold.

6 And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.

God tells Moses to number the people.

12 When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.

He then orders a flat tax.

15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

Exactly why a society that is roaming around the wilderness, eating free food, has a need for a monetary system, well, that's a wonder of the LORD!

Next, God commands Moses to make an anointing oil.

23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,

24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:

25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Myrrh is the sap of a tree; Cinnamon is normally the bark of the cinnamon tree; calamus is also known as sweetflag, is a monocot (like an orchid) that is scented, and can also be used as a psychotropic drug; cassia is similar to cinnamon. Wait a second... did that just say that calamus is a drug? Was Moses the original Timothy Leary?

30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.
God then wants Moses to make something; stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense:
35 And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:

Oh, a perfume, probably to cover up the smell of all the blood.

So what have we learned today?

1. Holy anointing oil is illegal in the U.S.

2. In addition to carpentry, God is also a master of cooking, cleaning and making clothes.

You will recall that the Ark of the Covenant was made out of shittim.

You missed out one of my favourite verses:
Exodus 28:33 And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:
34 A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about.

I can hardly begin to imagine how GODLY and dignified Aaron must have looked, covered in blue, purple and scarlet pomegranates, and jangling like a jester or a leper wherever he went. That's how a real Man of God should look.

Amen, this passage reminds me of my long, and prayerful studies of the Bible about the annointing that cannot touch filthy sinners, but can only touch and fill True-Christians™.

It is no wonder that sinners cannot SEE what they read in the Word of God.

Romans
7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

Isaiah
64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

The righteousness of un-saved trash is absolutely filthy rags.

Psalm
133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! 133:2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; 133:3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
Therefore, God knew what he was doing when he made the blue-print for the Tabernacle. Gold will stand for it is pure, and the Lord like nice things that last.

1 Corinthians
3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

And he has made us Thrue-Christians who have the authority to to decide who can go in, and who can not go in for they are doomed to hell.

For only Tru-Christians can offer up sacrifices that are worthy of the Lord.

1 Peter
2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Thus, the Tabernacle, and specifically, the annointing oil of the candlestick is a fundamental declaration that True-Christians™ are governed and filled by Jesus every single day.

Unsaved trash cannot enter the Tabernacle at all for their stench is not covered and the Lord does not like the foul smell of sinners.
