Default Day 278. Zechariah 4-6 - 09-13-2011, 05:55 PM

Zechariah 4-6

Zechariah 4

1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep.

Zechariah has a vision.

He saw a candlestick, a bowl, 7 lamps and seven pipes. Beside it was two olive trees (one on each side).

Zechariah asks the angel what they are. Basically, Zechariah saw a menorah. He sort of understood it, he was confused about the olive trees. The Menorah symbolized the completion of the rebuilding of the temple. He still didn't understand the trees. Other than the menorah was fed by a bowl containing olive oil.

12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?

Oh, there's that word branch again.

14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth.

So, if the LORD is the Menorah, the two trees are the anointed ones. Who are they? At that time, one was Zerubbabel (the secular governor (if he was secular)), the other was Joshua the high priest. The menorah united the two parts of the people's lives, the one tree representing the nation, the other representing the temple/religion. Secular law (which isn't really secular, since the king is there to enforce "legally" God's law) and God's law, as given by the priests. A branch from each went into the Menorah, because both are needed to finish the job of rebuilding the temple.

Zechariah 5

Zechariah has another vision.

2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

Not a breakfast roll, (even though there's breadth, hehe). It's a scroll. The size of this scroll is 20 by 10 cubits. That's the same measurements as the entry way into the Holy Place in the temple. (1 Kings 6:3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house. )

3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.

It's a curse, but it's only a curse if you do bad. Blessings and curses go together.

6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.

An ephah is a basket.

7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

There is a lady in the basket.

8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

As usual, women are used as the personification of evil. So there's an evil woman in a basket. Sealed with a lead disk.

9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

Then two winged women take the basket...

11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

Shinar, where is Shinar? Shinar is used seven times in the KJV1611. The first time was in Genesis 10:10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

Babel... Shinar. Shinar means the land of two rivers (Shene nahar, "two rivers", conversely Shene or "two cities", or Sumer "native land") , they don't mean Pittsburgh. It's Mesopotamia, specifically Babylon.

So the evil woman is building a house in Babylon (foreshadowing?, jeez Bible, don't give away the really cool ending when we still have just under 100 days of reading left).

Zechariah 6

1 And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.

Two mountains, this could either be the Israel mountains of the Mount of Olives and Mount Moriah, or it could be representative of other nations. Babylon was called a destroying mountain in Jeremiah 51:25, and Zechariah earlier calls Persia a mountain.

2 In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;

3 And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.

The four charioteers just doesn't sound as fun as the four horsemen.

11 Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;

Joshua (the high priest) is going to get a crown, earlier he was promised a neato hat.

12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:

The BRANCH, this branch is Jesus.

13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

That's our saviour.

15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the LORD, and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God.

All you have to do is actually obey God, and it will come true.

So what have we learned today?

1. Jesus is the light that binds together church and state. He doesn't separate them, he JOINS them.

2. Women belong in baskets in Babylon, not in cakes at bachelor parties. Especially whores.

3. Zechariah is the last book of the Old Testament, so far, if you have ever read Revelation before, this will seem familiar.
