I have a problem. I had been working diligently in my garden all spring to get a nice crop of sweet corn. This strain has been passed down the Mayfield family for generations. It is perfect for it's sugar content.
This afternoon, I see my neighbor out in my garden picking some of my corn! I ran down the stairs and burst out into the garden with my shotgun ready to rebuke.
My neighbor said to me, "Wait a minute brother. You are a True Christian™ Don't forget Deuteronomy 23:25!"
Confound it! It seems he had me!

When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.

He had no sickle. Brothers, I know he'll be back soon for the rest as it ripens.
What can I do?

Your neighbor is breaking the ears of corn from the stalks, God feels he should die for his theft and you should not worry about it as it is just and fair.

I have never been able to 'pluck' an ear of corn. I'd pull the whole darned thing out of the ground, I have to bend and snap an ear off or use a knife.

To be fair, next time, ask him if he was plucking your corn. If he admits to plucking, then you have you answer.

I don't think you would be out of line if you filled his britches with some rock salt. Christians aren't perfect we are just forgiven.

I am concerned about this incident, not least because I have a few hundred acres near the road to the Old Bridge.

As we see from Ruth:2, gleaning is approved by God, and an act of Charity. However, the gleaner has to be poor. Is your neighbour poor? If not, He is a thief and should be dealt with accordingly.

A reading of the verse before, gives the clue, the thieving, poverty-struck, heathen must eat what he takes there and then.

De:23:24: When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel.

The same applies to

De:23:25: When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.

Mr. Mayfield, this thread strikes a powerful chord for me, because I am at this very moment grappling with a very similar situation:

I recently found an odd fellow sleeping in a tent in my back yard!

His tent reeked of stale marijuana smoke, and when I woke him, I informed him that mine is a Christian household, and I don't cotton much to homeless weirdos toking up on my property!

He replied by asking, "Have we met?"

"Certainly not," I said.

"So that makes us perfect strangers?" he asked.

"Well of course," I said.

"And you say you're a Christian?" he said, with the beginnings of a sly smile on his face.

When I answered in the affirmative, he retorted with:

Leviticus 19:34

But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

I realized with dismay that I was trapped!

That was over a week ago, and since that time, he's run an electrical line from my house into his tent to power his hot plate and also another line for cable TV. He apparently ordered an additional cable box from Comcast, and based on the moaning sounds I've been hearing in the middle of the night, I fear my next cable bill is going to contain numerous charges for adult pay-per-view movies.

Also, in the morning, he's usually locked in my bathroom for at least an hour, which makes it challenging for me to get shaved and showered and out the door on time.

Whenever I hint that it might be time for him to move along, he gets this sorrowful expression and accuses me of not loving him like myself, as God commanded.

I have tried and tried to love this man, but I really don't like the way he smells, and I miss my privacy. Am I stuck with him, or what?

He doesn't sound like a perfect stranger at all, to be perfect he'd need to be a True Christian™! I think you should head over to the church with haste to check whether he is on the tithing register to confirm his identity. If he isn't listed, you can state Matthew 18:15, inform him that he isn't a perfect stranger and is in fact an imperfect stranger. Tell him he is not allowed to be there and see how he reacts. If he leaves, you have gained a brother in Christ, and if he doesn't you can evict him with righteous force.
