I know that everyone loves a good juicy cherry pie, or a marangue, or a good cream pie, and I especially like nut pies like pecan, but I started learning about some less common pies from some of my newer female friends who are from a generation when people did things differently and a good pie was something to be proud of.

What are some of the less common types of pie that have, at best, a regional presence? Here are some for the list:

• chess pie (still popular in parts of the South)
• vinegar pie (sometimes, but not always, equated to chess pie)
• transparent pie (similar to the above; seems particular to Kentucky)
• Jefferson Davis pie (similar to above, but many recipes call for clove, etc.)
• buttermilk pie (similar to chess pie, attributed to the South)
• Indiana sugar cream pie (a usually eggless sugar, cream, and flour pie)
• finger pie (seems to be mostly synonymous with sugar cream pie)
• Bob Andy pie (a custardy pie with clove, etc. often attributed to the Amish)
• Tyler pudding pie (a cream and egg pie with vanilla and nutmeg)
• molasses pie (a book I have attributes it primarily to Georgia)
• shoofly pie (a molasses pie linked to the Pennsylvania Amish and the South)
• Nesselrode pie (a rich pie made with chestnut puree and candied fruits)
• mince meat pie (the real thing, made with suet)
• Colonial innkeeper's pie (a cakey pie containing chocolate and walnuts)
• cheese pie (a book I have attributes it to Cincinnati)
• squash pie (winter squashes besides pumpkin; New England)
• sour cream raisin pie (present in the midwest, but the book cites Vermont)
• grape pie (made with Concord grapes; seems linked to New England)
• green tomato pie (with sugar, butter, spices, etc.; recipes from New England and South)
• Derby pie (pecan, chocolate, bourbon; from the 1960s; Kentucky)
• Tar Heel pie (chocolate, pecans; probably mid-20th c.; No. Carolina)
• mock apple pie (uses Ritz crackers for filling; seems to date from 1930s)

.... A lot of these are "desperation" pies (made with cheap ingredients) or "pantry" pies (made with common items on hand) from the 19th century or early 20th century.

I've only had versions of a few of the above pies, but hope to find or try the rest.

Your new female friends baked you all those pies? I only heard of one of them -- mince meat pie, and that was here at Landover Baptist Church.

It just boggles my mind that all of those ladies would let you eat their pies.

I didn't mean that I had tried all of them; some of them I found searching the internets. I'm curious to try many different types of pie. Each one is unique and beautiful in is own way, and is surely a treat to enjoy!

Derby pie is an awesome pie, just be weary to follow the receipe closely especially when it calls for the bourbon. I put too much in mine one year and well let's just say it's not pleasant. Of I do live live in The Derby City, KY so it's not possible for me NOT to know how to bake a Derby pie, Sweet potato pie is my best pie though.

Potato pie is quite nice. My wife used to bake me one every day and I love a good feed of spuds. I don't think much of the steak and kidney. We also do a cabbage and liver pie which is a delicacy here. Mmmmm

Shepherds pie is also quite tasty, but sometime if you get older ones the filling can be a bit tough and stringy.

That's to be expected. Those shepherds spend a lot of time out in the wild and by the desert.

well, hoowee! here's a topic that I can really sink my teeth into, Praise Christ! Mama's mama (RIP) used to make a delicious bog catfish sperm and boysenberry pie what was the toast of all of Defeated, TN! but she up and forgot to write down the recipe on account of her not knowin how to make her letters? shoot. I keep trying trying to get the spices right, but the corbin bernsen catfish sperm keeps tastin like hog brain!

Sister Lori, keep working on that recipe. ShouldWhen you ever get those spices right I'm sure that pie will be a winner at your local state fair. All the gentlemen in attendance will fall over themselves just to get a taste of your unique and special pie.

well, I thanks y'all kindly for the encouragement! them catfish is been gettin ornery something rabid as of late! I think it has something to do with all them barrels of industrial waste them eggheads from up at the rendering plant have been dumping in the bog? it gives the waters an eerie glow at night, and them swamp vapors wafting off the bog is pungent as can be!

But I make a little money on the side from the bog dumping, which I tithe to Peyton Creek Baptist Church over in Carthage, TN? they tryin to raise some money for to hire a lawyer for they Pastor who got caught by the Feds gambling on the Tennessee Vols with Church money? Shoot, it's tough to blame the good Pastor, Peyton Manning's alma mater is always a sure bet!

One time I went to England and some lesbians vegetarians had their quorn pies out for tasting. I only took a sniff and it smelt kind of musty so I didn't chow down on it. What do they put in that thing to make it smell like that???

One of my aunts makes this amazing fudge pecan pie for Thanksgiving. Her health isn't the best right now, so I'm going to try to get the recipe so I can make it this year in case she ends up being too under the weather to make it herself.

I'll gladly post the recipe if I can get it.

Osgood Pie - a variation on Vinegar or Chess pie that includes raisins and pecans.


I also make a Chocolate Osgood Pie.

I've heard the name isn't from the inventor of the pie, but rather from husband's exclaiming "OH, 's GOOD" between mouthfuls.
