New respect for Switzerland -
07-28-2023, 05:12 PM
I have been following the debate in the news about Swiss patriots being allowed to burn the Koran. Well, today in retaliation someone has received permission to burn the Torah.
Quote:
Sweden approves Torah burning in Stockholm outside Israeli embassy
Stockholm police have granted a woman in her 50s permission to hold a public gathering outside the Israeli embassy on Friday during which the woman plans to “light the Torah with a lighter”.
[Israeli] foreign Minister Eli Cohen responded to this report on Thursday. "I am appalled by the further threat to burn a Torah scroll in Sweden. The threats to harm holy books and Torah books must be stopped. I intend to speak with the Swedish Foreign Minister and make it clear to him that we expect the Swedish government to prevent such events, which could damage relations between the countries."
Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, the Rabbi of the Western Wall and the Holy Places in Israel also reacted to this report: "I am astonished and deeply disturbed by the Stockholm police's second approval of the burning of the [Torah]. The Swedish authorities' weak response, merely uttering empty words about freedom, pales in comparison to the heinous actions. This is not what freedom should look like; it represents a loss of moral direction."

Waaaah! Is that the sound of false religionists crying in their cornflakes? GET RIGHT with Jesus and follow the Bible. This is how Christianity will win by burning all the false texts.

Thank you for the scripture, Sister! The issue continues to simmer along nicely. Every burnt Koran brings us one book closer to a Christian theocracy.
Quote:
[Swedish prime minister Ulf] Kristersson ruled out reducing Sweden’s legal protections for freedom of expression – which are among the strongest globally – but said his government would consider changes that would allow police to stop Qur’an burnings if they posed a threat to national security.
|
A high bar. Sounds like a challenge.
In response:
Quote:
Imam Mahmoud Khalfi, a spokesperson for Stockholm mosque, where 600-700 people come to pray every day, said: “Every time, you wait for this absurdity that nobody supports to be put to a stop. It’s just negative and has dangerous consequences.”
|
Dangerous consequences...? Hmm, sounds a bit lame. Imam Khalfi is going to have to up his game if he is to pose a threat to national security.
Quote:
Nora, 16, said she did not understand the burnings, which she described as unnecessary. Asked whether they should be banned, the student sighed. “That’s a hard one,” she said. “Freedom of expression is really important to a certain degree, but when it starts to violate other people it’s not right.”
Iman Omer, 20, said it should be possible to classify the Qur’an burnings as a hate crime. “I understand you are allowed to think and feel what you want, this is a free country, but there must be boundaries”
|
Oddly enough, Nora, 16, Iman Omer, 20, and I share similar values on freedom. It's OK in it's place but when it gets out of hand someone's freedom is going to have to get violated, starting with the First Amendment (speech, assembly, religion, the press, etc., aka the little bullshit) and up to habeus corpus for especially crispy books.

As long as these people aren't burning the Bible, King James 1611 Edition, then nobody should interfere with their right to free speech.

Some considerations in considering these questions are (from the red section) what constitutes a threat to national security and (from the yellow section) how one defines hate? This is not a problem for Christians because terms are defined in The Bible and are easy to look up – whether or not one does so or agrees with those definitions is a separate question, of course.
Let's say "Ermintrude" [not her real name] looks up a definition. The hate response is evoked under certain circumstances, this poor fellow being the example used:
Amos 5:19 ..a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. Not having a very good day. God feels like that when He is rejected: for serpents, bears, lions et al., benevolence is not forthcoming: no matter how one ululates or wails, it will be a noise He hates and where light may have been hoped for, God delivers darkness. Hoping that she doesn't qualify as a serpent laying in wait on a wall somewhere, Ermintrude continues with a comment from Job:
Job 12:6 The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly. Here she sees that security is temporary. When a true theocracy is established, it will be initiated by Jesus. Everyone not accepting His Perfect Love will be killed off by various means, war, drowning, fire, birds and so on leaving no trace. God will rule directly and His head of government will be Jesus, The Bible explains, with no suns necessary to provide light. There will be no sea. The point Ermintrude gleans from this is that although marauders may prosper in the short term, or even for centuries, in the long term it's a doomed business model.
However, the wretch Ermintrude decides, “That's ridiculous! Security should be secure, not arbitrarily cut off to demonstrate how sky ogres can lavish luxury upon whom they choose so you better watch out, you may not be a wall serpent but you could be the next Job..” or in her case, one of his daughters. Job did get replacement daughters† but they were not the same daughters. She further thinks that murdering everyone who disagrees with your dogma just to establish a pure land is unsustainable, due an ongoing need for murder of everyone starting to question things in the future. Jesus, she decides, is to be that murderer. There are many other details she finds where she disagrees with God. Can she therefore be considered a Christian?
Criteria need to be established whereby issues relating to security and hatefulness can be evaluated, with other more foundational criteria invoked for definitions of what's being assessed. Otherwise how would anyone know what they were trying to preserve or determine what constituted a threat?
† Job 1:18-19; 42:13-14

I suppose it could start forest fires ... but do they have forests in the Alpine lands, and wouldn't the snow and glaciers prevent that sort of problem?

I have definitely never heard of a glacier fire. But if a glacier is just a frozen river and rivers don't cause the oceans to overflow, how would melting glaciers cause forest fires? Job 36:27-28

Is it true what they say, that everything is backwards in New Zealand? For instance, the toilet flushing the wrong way. Or cars driving on the left side. They're as bad as the Austrians by all accounts.

The cars in New Zealand drive in the right side of the road. They're just upside down.
