Default Day 53. Deuteronomy 7-9 - 10-27-2007, 06:00 PM

Deuteronomy 7-9

Today in our Bible in a Year study, we once again are going through the book of Deuteronomy (stuff).

We continue with the second of Moses sermons today.

Today we get:
  • Moses talks about Gods anger
  • He touches a little on his mercy
  • More talk on graven images
  • How great the promised land is
  • A little reminiscing on the wandering through the wilderness

Deuteronomy 7

1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

The seven nations, once again, are

Hittites
Girgashites
Amorites
Canaanites
Perizzites
Hivites
Jebusites

2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

These days, that's known as genocide.

3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

If this isn't clearly a commandment to not mix races, I don't know what is. God CLEARLY doesn't want the races to mix, not just races, but also creeds. As all of these peoples came from the same area. Remember Esau took a wife of the Canaanites.

5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

Why are there still "islam holy sites" in Iraq? Why does the Temple Mount in Jerusalem have a mudslim mosque on top of it, where the LORD's temple should be?

Oh, remember earlier Leviticus 19, God said that the fruit of the trees will be "uncircumcised" for three years. Here in Deuteronomy 7:5, Moses tells the people to cut down the groves. These aren't the same fruit groves. These are groves where Pagan worship of false gods happens. Similar to the druids. The groves where false god worship takes place is similar to a house of worship for their pagan gods. That's why they are to be cut down.

Moses then talks about why God loves them.

7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Basically, He loves them, because Abraham FIRST loved Him.

9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Praise Jesus, He loves those that keep his commandments. I'm sure "modern christianity" loves this verse. I doubt they ever really read the verse right after it. How many times have you heard Deuteronomy 7:10 all by itself?

10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

When was the last time Joel Osteen mentioned that God will hate people to their face. When was the last time you heard that psycho painted whore of babylon Jan Crouch say that God can actually do something other than make a child smile?

Moses then tells the people that if (yeah right) they follow the LORD's commandments, that he will bless them above all people.

21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.

Don't be afraid of the others, because, if He wants to be God can be worse than any nightmare that you can conceive!

23 But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.

It's always a good policy to destroy something until it's destroyed!

The people are reminded again of molten (graven) images. They are told to destroy the ones they find in the promised land.

26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

This goes for all abominations, not just for graven images.

Deuteronomy 8

If the people follow the commandments, they will live and posses the land.

5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

A man loves his son. That's why he corrects them. God loves his people, that's why He causes them to roam the wilderness for 40 years. That's why He ensured that no one over the age of 20 (40 years ago; except for Caleb and Joshua) got to go into the promised land. Can you provide as much love for your children? To offer them hope, and then to provide it to your grandchildren? Or do you go back on your word and allow your children the candy bar when they were rowdy at the grocery store?

God provides the spanking, and doesn't give the candy bar. Are you as good a parent?

7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

Yay barley!

Moses reminds the people that all good things they will get are not on their own accord, it's all because of God.

18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God:for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

All good things come from above; as do all bad things.

If you forget he'll eventually remind you.

19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 9

When you go in...

3 Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.

God will do it for them.

4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.

God's not doing it because they are good (10 transgressions?) but because the 7 nations are bad. How are they bad? Well, they didn't die out during the 7 year famine like they should have! They (like the injuns) pre-stole the land from the people of Israel.

6 Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

Stiffnecked people need circumcised!

Moses reiterates some of the stiffneckedness.

7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.

in the wilderness...

8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you.

in horeb when Moses went to get the decalogue, remember the golden calf?

Heck, God wanted to kill them all; even Aaron.

21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.

I thought he made them drink it?

Exodus 32:20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

Hmm, why didn't he mention the making them drink it? Dunno.

22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the LORD to wrath.

Three more times...

Moses says.

24 Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

Damn joos!

Moses finishes up with mentioning how he bargained with God to not destroy them all, because otherwise, God would appear weak to the other nations.

And that ends today, so what have we learned.

1. God REALLY hates graven images.

2. Moses, a very MEEK guy, really likes to talk, even though in Exodus 4:10, he claimed he wasn't eloquent. For being a guy who doesn't like to talk, he sure did talk alot, imagine how long the first 5 books of the Bible (KJV1611) would be if Moses wasn't slow to speak?

3. Once again, stiffnecked people need circumcision!
