The Importance of Memorizing Scripture -
12-28-2014, 12:34 AM
Dear Members of Landover Baptist,
My children posed a question to me about why they are required to memorize scripture. You see, in addition to home schooling the regular subjects, I require my children to memorize chosen scripture from the King James Bible every day. At the age of one, they were required to memorize one verse a day. At the age of two, they were required to memorize two verses each day. At the age of three, three verses, and so on, and so on.
So to answer their question, I first shared the following verses with them.
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Ephesians 4:17-24
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
I explained that the "renewing of the mind" was like washing the brain. Memorizing the Holy Word of our Lord washes away all the sinful things in their little brains. I told them that Christians need to forget their sinful old lives and live for Christ. We memorize Bible verses each day in order to help do this.
So basically, memorizing Bible verses washes their little brains and minds clean! What a lovely thought!
I just wanted to see if any other Landover Parents had any thoughts on this subject.

Well said. But the most important reason to encourage your children to memorize the Holy Word of God is so that they can be more like me.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:
Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)

Pastor Ezekiel, I am so glad that my teaching methods meet your approval.
I was not fortunate enough to be home schooled (since it was very rare in the 70s and 80s). But I did attend a Christian school from K-5 through 9th grade. I have such fond memories of teachers making me memorize so many Bible verses. To this day (I'm 46) I can still recite all the verses of the Holy Word of God that I was made to memorize.
Praise Jesus that he washed my brain and mind - and replaced all my sinful thoughts with his Holy Word!

You'd be surprised how quickly a recalcitrant child can recall scripture when he sees the red dot of a laser sight dancing around on the tip of his nose!
"Think quick, Rudolph!", I always tell the kids during Bible study!

It is always important to know the rules.
