Pastor Endorses "Superman" -
06-16-2013, 12:31 AM
I hereby wholeheartedly endorse the new movie "Superman, Man of Steel." I say this of my own accord and not because anyone staggered me with their generosity in addition to agreeing to my request to deposit everything in the Cayman Islands.
All you kids run off and see it now. Shoo. Right now. Go ask your pappy for $20 and off with you.
Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:
Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)

I don't think that I've seen any movies since Senator Joe was disgracefully ousted. The last one was Moby Dick, and I was pleased to find that it was not pornographic or about Wales.
In the movie, does Superman get crucified in the end and forgive all our sins? Is he everywhere at once and at one with God and The Holy Spirit? More importantly, was his mother a virgin, or is that part glossed over?
And I'm not too sure that I want to be in a place filled with kids clutching the change from $20 bills and behaving disgustingly in the back seats.
Nevertheless, on your advice, I'll see if any of my grandchildren want to go.

I was able to watch on opening night. It's a good movie, and if you want to go deep there are some allusions to Christianity. The biggest lesson that I walked away with is that an alien like Superman is willing to serve the good ol' USA as penance for the many years he spent stealing important jobs like waiter/bar back and 'Deadliest Catch"-style fisherman from hard working white people. The best part is that he doesn't try to sneak his "brothers" and "sisters" across the border like a damned wet back, but instead openly fights to keep them out of God's country. Not only has he decided to serve our nation, but he learned God's favorite language--American and was a good surrogate son to his adopted parents. The movie wisely avoids the topic of what sins Superman's adoptive mother must have committed to become barren while also showing the character of Johnathan Kent to be tolerant as he did not put his wife away or stone her for being such.
All in all I think it's a movie that Christians can watch without fear although the "woman reporter" is a little uppity and probably should have been spanked by both Superman and Perry White to put her in her place. The film-makers nearly lost me there, but then I remembered that this movie was only a fantasy and that I should probably try to suspend my disbelief a little bit more on clearly outlandish fantastic ideas such as competent women in the workplace, which would never happen in real life.

I trust you, Pastor, though I must confess that the idea of a man from outer space coming to save us from a magical threat seems quite far fetched and more like something some jungle savage might dream up.

Yeah, I see what you mean. A magical man with infinite power who comes to save us from a problem we would not have but for his existance seems a bit self contradictory.

1 Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Yes. I haven't seen the movie yet, but its very premise seems to be that we are clueless mor ons who would struggle to function without some utterly infeasible magical being from the clouds popping up to rescue us.
We have Jesus! Why would we need something to save us? He is our rock. Our shield against the forces of darkness that threaten us: like Obama.
Psalm 140:7-7
4Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
5The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
6I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.
7O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle. What need have we for this sort of obviously constructed fantasy in this movie when we have Jesus?
That said, the Pastor says it's OK. What to do?
