Can we take out the "Meek Shall Inherit the Earth" part? -
11-30-2009, 02:16 AM
I am always troubled by the implications of Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
The verse seems to imply one doesn't have to do anything to gain God's Blessing. It doesn't actually say the meek are assured entry into Heaven (thank God), but isn't it stating pretty clearly they're going to rule over us? Chilling.
(Also, "meek" could be misread as "weak" by the unsuspecting.)
But what I am asking is, Could that line have been a typo in the original transcription? Those scrolls etc. were rather dirty. Maybe it's actually an allusion to leeks, which can take over a kitchen garden if you don't weed them out regularly? I had that problem in the Spring. Or is it supposed to be peaks, as in if a second flood comes, the mountain peaks shall inherit the earth, ie, everything else will be under water?
I just find the thought of either the meek or the weak ruling over us to be disquieting, to say the least. I don't see how that could be what the Good Lord meant....

I read it as being humble, submissive and meek when you appear before the Lord on Judgment day.

But kind sister, what shall we care of the Earth on Judgment Day? Will we even be here to "inherit" it? We are promised to ascend to His Heavenly Kingdom, and all Earthly trifles shall fall away.
I do not mean to contradict, nor am I calling His Book into question. I just know from my own housekeeping techniques that it is near impossible to remove stains from old paper....and I wonder if, stored out in that damnable Eastern desert for so long -- as the parchments were -- if wine or camel spit or some such indelicacy might have smudged that particular word?
It simply doesn't make sense (to me)

I can assure you that Jesus was referring to True Christians™ when He spoke of "the meek." We are the most humble, sweet, and self-deprecating folk on Earth!
