Default Day 220. Isaiah 58-60 - 10-30-2009, 09:05 PM

Isaiah 58-60

Isaiah 58

1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

This Isaiah is about to rebuke the people.

3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

I'd almost expect this to be verse 3a and 3b. At the end of "no knowledge?" begins 3b. It goes from the people asking why God isn't answering their fasts; to God saying it's because you aren't doing it right.

4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

Well, it's not that they were doing it wrong, it's that they did it for the wrong reasons. For example, a guy would get in an argument with his neighbor, and pray for God to help him, and accompany that with a fast. God didn't like that. (Granted it was probably ok when David did it, but not when the average Joes do it).

5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

This is the appropriate way to fast, however, just because they did it right, doesn't mean that they did it for the right reasons.

11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Oddly enough, if fasting is done correctly, it will lead to God providing a plentiful bounty. When that happens, I'm not sure if you are still supposed to continue fasting.

14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

Ok, so fasting is having stuff but not using it, and then when you do that, God will give you more of the stuff; but only if you fast for the glory of God, and not for your own selfish desires.

Isaiah 59

1 Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

It's not that God doesn't want to save you; it's that you have moved yourself further away from him.

2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

God didn't change, it's you that have moved.

3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

Those things aren't near God. If you want to be nearer to God, then you need to get away from the bad things.

7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

Running to evil, is definitely not running to God.

16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

Israel (and the whole world) was going to crap. No single person was stepping up to get the people back (what was Isaiah doing?) to God. So God did it himself.

17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.

The redeemer is for those that turn from transgression, not necessarily for everyone.

21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.

Yes, we're all aware of how long "for ever" is.

Isaiah 60

1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

Remember, at some point in the future, God is going to make everything absolutely perfect. He'll do away with evil. Exactly what he's waiting for, I have no idea. Why wouldn't you start that... oh... on day 1?

2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

This is a promise for a happy Zion. The rest of the world will be crap, but Israel will be perfect.

5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.

The God of the whole world is going to rain down blessings on the Hebrews. The Gentiles will be coming and hoping to catch some of that reflected glory. But don't forget, this is for the children of Jacob.

11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.

People will just be bringing great stuff to Israel because God is there.

12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

Remember the fasting from the above chapter? You had to give some to ultimately get some. If you don't give to Israel you won't last long.

18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.

For this to happen, it will require a messiah that is able to convince all of Islam that the Jews are the right religion. Christians will probably accept it. Muslims won't. They'll probably have to be wiped out.

So what have we learned today?

1. If you fast for the right reasons, you'll reap stuff.

2. If you can't find God, it's probably because you've moved far away from him.

3. When the messiah comes (again) Israel will be fully at peace. God can make the world peaceful in the blink of an eye, he just chooses not to.
