I think I understand that. Works are the result of faith.
Faith is like the flame. Works are the light cast on the table.
If the flame is burning there will light or, conversely, if you can see the light you know the candle is lit.
If there is no light you know there is no flame, unless someone's covered it up but that concept was rejected by Jesus as an absurdity.
Mark 4:21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
The real problem for Lutherans however must be the multitude of internal sects. Quite apart from churches of Sweden or Denmark there are squabbling synods even within single countries such as America or Australia and whatever happens in Germany can scarcely deviate altogether from Luther's teaching. He was a particularly unpleasant person, not Christ like at all whether assessed by the lumens of his flame or the darkness of his works. Substituting a slightly different set of lies for the lies of popes is not really an achievement. But perhaps I've misunderstood?
