Default Day 42. Numbers 10-12 - 10-16-2007, 06:12 PM

Numbers 10-12

Today we get:
  • Trumpets
  • Marching orders
  • Bitching jews
  • More bitching jews

Numbers 10

God said;
2 Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.

When both are blown, everyone is to gather at the door of the tabernacle.

When only one is blown, the 12 princes are to gather at the tabernacle.

5 When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.

We aren't told the difference in the sound of an alarm and just a regular come here blow.

Remember from day 39, the east army was Judah, Issachar, and Zebulon.

6 When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

The south army was Reuben, Simeon, and Gad.

9 And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

God will remember you if you blow a trumpet.

10 Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.

Trumpets announce most everything.

11 And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.

It's moving time!

12 And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.

We now get the order of march for the Jews. Guess what we also get, a list of the princes of the tribes... AGAIN!

14 In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

1. Judah
2. Issachar
3. Zebulon
4/5. Gershon, Merari bearing the tabernacle.
6. Reuben
7. Simeon
8. Gad
9. Kohathites, bearing the sanctuary and the holy things.
10. Ephriam
11. Manasseh
12. Benjamin
13. Dan
14. Asher
15. Naphtali

28 Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.

Every time God decided it was time to move, they went in that order.

29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.

Moses asked his brother in law, Hobab, to go with them. Raguel was another name of Jethro.

30 And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.

He stuck around.

33 And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.

Then God found a spot and waited for the people.

Numbers 11

1 And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

The jews complained? I find that hard to believe. They've always been so content.

So God killed some of them.

2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.

They whined to Moses, who managed to get God to stop burning them up.

4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

All they've eaten has been manna. Apparently the quail promised in Exodus 16:13 hasn't arrived yet.

So the people were complaining about only eating manna.

10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

I'm sure the Levites weren't hungry, they just had that massive sin offering feast that they had to eat.

So Moses complains to God about having to be a parent to the Jews.

12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

He (like a Jew) complains to God that his burden is too much.

14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

I'd agree, it is better to die, than to have to listen to the Jews complain.

So, God devises a plan to spread the governing over the people to 70 people.

17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

That's right, it takes 70 men to bear the burden that Moses bore himself.

18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.

Yay, God will give them something to eat, other than that nourishing manna.

19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;

20 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

So, they'll be eating so much they will never want to see flesh again!

So Moses wonders where God is gonna get enough food to feed 600,000 people.

22 Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?

God tells Moses to STFU, He's God and He will do it how He wants.

23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

Moses tells everyone, they seem happy, then God spreads the burden on the 70, when He did, they started to prophesy.

All of them but 2 stopped after a while. Someone goes and bitches that they were doing it.

29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

Wouldn't it be great if God's spirit was on all His people?

So, then God sends the quail.

32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

It was probably the tastiest quail ever. I'd imagine if it were stuffed, with manna, it'd be delicious.

33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

Errr... nevermind.

Numbers 12

1 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.

So Miriam and Aaron were bitching that Moses married who he did.

2 And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.

They were wondering why Moses was so all "high and mighty" doesn't God also talk to them?

3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

Wait, who wrote Numbers? Moses, right. It's that kind of boastful to call yourself meek, infact, isn't it really boastful to say you are the meekest person on the earth?

Dictionary.com say that meek is

Quote:
Showing patience and humility; gentle.
So, the meekest person on the earth is the guy who made people drink the powdered golden calf. Who broke the first ten commandments in a fit of rage. Who killed an Egyptian. Who authorized the slaughter of 3000 people who worshiped the golden calf. This is the meekest person on earth?

4 And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.

So God comes down and talks to them.

Tells them that prophets, He talks to in visions and dreams. But Moses;

8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

He doesn't mince words, or make the person try to interpret the dream, He says EXACTLY what he means.

9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed.

But God doesn't just leave angry, He kicks ass when He goes. Remember, he smote two of Aaron's boys for strange incense.

10 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.

That'll learn her! Aaron begs for mercy.

13 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee.

14 And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.

They kick her out for 7 days, when she comes back, they pack up and head to Paran.

So what have we learned today?

1. Again, we are told who the princes of the tribes are.

2. We get who goes where, when they leave for a new place.

3. Don't mock Moses in front of God, He will give you leprosy.

4. If you bitch about the free food, God will send you birds that will rot in your mouth, and that will kill you.

Of course GOD was upset! He sent quails and the people gathered homers! Maybe there was some confusion about stuffing manna.

32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

Whoa, you're going too fast brother - way too fast. And you're glossing over what is surely the greatest miracle in the entire Bible. There were far more than 600,000 people, there were 603,550 not including Levites, women and children.

Numbers 1:46 Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.
Numbers 1:47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

So let's just multiply by 4 and assume there were 2,414,200. That's a lot of people to feed - but Our Lord He sure delivered.

Numbers 11:31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.

A cubit is 22 inches, so the Lord was stacking those quails at 44 inches for a day's journey on each side of the camp.

The camp must have been at least twelve miles square - that would be the minimum space needed for 2,414,200 people and their cattle.

According to the Jewish Encyclopedia, a day's journey is 27.8 miles. This means that there was been a stack of quails for 67.6 miles (i.e. 27.8 + 12 + 27.8). The quails thus covered 4569.76 square miles, from which deducting the 144 square miles of the central camp leaves us 4425.76 square miles of quails piled 44 inches high - an area 500 square miles larger than the whole states of Delaware and Rhode Island, plus the city of Greater New York!

If we look at the number of quails needed, we may a assume that one quail takes up 3x3x3 inches (the quails at the bottom of the mass would probably be even flatter), so that's 64 quails to the cubic foot.

One square mile is 27,878,400 square feet, so 4425.76 square miles would equal 123,383,107,584 square feet. Each square foot being covered by 44 inches, or 3.66 feet worth of quails - with 64 quails to the cubic foot, to give us a total of 452,404,727,808 cubic feet of quails - or 28,953,902,579,712 quails. So even if God had to feed 2,414,200 hungry mouths, it would still leave them with 11,993,167 quails each.

No wonder the Bible states "And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day,"

Now, there's a fine subject for a Sunday sermon if I've ever heard one.

I seemed to have missed this verse in today's reading, brother.

Numbers 11:21 And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.

So obviously a few people died between Numbers 1 and Numbers 11.

Given that meekness implies humility, no man can honestly call himself the meekest person in the world.

The only way that Moses could have truthfully written that statement is if God was telling him what to write. Therefore, this verse is further proof of the divine inspiration of scripture.

Praise God!

It was sure nice of Moses to ask for healing for her after she bad-mouthed his wife.
