Default Day 269. Obadiah 1 - 02-01-2011, 07:26 PM

Obadiah 1

Obadiah 1

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

Today we get the shortest book of the Bible, Obadiah. It consists of only 21 verses. It's about the destruction of Edom. If you type in the word Edom into these forums, you'll notice that it's underlined with a red wavy line, meaning it's not in the dictionary. That's how bad the destruction of Edom is, it doesn't even get into most spell checks.

Who was Obadiah? No one is exactly sure when he lived and did his prophecy. No one is exactly sure who he really was. It's claimed that he was an Edomite, remember Edom was the kingdom that came from Jacob's brother Esau. You'll note in this chapter/book that the terms Esau and Edom are interchanged. Most people believe that Obadiah was a descendant of Eliphaz (one of the buddies of Job). Most likely, this Obadiah was the same guy from 1 Kings 18:3, day 101 who hid all the prophets from that bitch Jezebel. Obadiah may have been a contemporary of Jeremiah.

2 Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

God is talking to the land of Edom now. Remember, Esau had red hair, he was pretty much the original ginger. Still to this day, gingers are greatly despised.

4 Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

Remember a couple of days ago, back to Day 263, in Hosea 8, the eagle was Babylon. Here we see that Edom is exalting themselves like the eagle (Babylon). More on this in a moment.

8 Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

God's going to punish Edom, but exactly why?

10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

What specific violence? Remember, under David, he made the Edomites pay tribute (1 Chronicles 18:13) so they weren't a strong military force to contend with.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

Oh, it's because when Jerusalem was being captured, Edom didn't help Judah, Edom helped the people who were doing the capturing. Except it's worse than that.

12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

Edom didn't assist with the capture, Edom went in after and spoiled the place.

13 Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

14 Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

Edom was a tattletale, standing on the outside yelling "he's over here" about any of the people that escaped from the Eagle.

17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

God will bring Judah back. They are going to have there.

18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

There won't be any more Esau. But there will be Jerusalem.

Marijuana is the flame, Heroin is the fuse, LSD is the Bomb!

Jacob is the fire, Joseph is the flame, Esau is the stubble.

So what have we learned?

1. Edom's destruction is so great that they aren't even in spell check.

2. Jerusalem is coming back.

3. Edom won't be
