Default Day 95. 2 Samuel 22-24 - 12-13-2007, 10:58 PM

2 Samuel 22-24

Today we get:
  • David sings
  • David talks
  • David does a bad thing

2 Samuel 22

1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

So far David's enemies have been Saul; Absalom and Sheba.

2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

God is strong, and will protect.

3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

Well, David didn't really battle anyone other than Philistines; the rest of his "enemies" were killed by other people.

7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.

He also ran away like a little girl.

9 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

Trees also killed a lot of people.

18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.

Actually, he had the opportunity to kill all of them easily, but decided not to do it.

21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

Well, there was the whole adultery thing, which he seemed to have forgotten.

He also shut up a wife that he hated, instead of divorcing her. But through it all, he didn't REALLY do something bad to God.

23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.

Yeah, except for the Bathsheba/Uriah thingy.

28 And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.

The child of his born to Bathsheba must have been very haughty.

32 For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?

That's right, our LORD is the ONLY God, you hear that wiccans!!!

38 I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.

Isn't this a song about victory over Saul, who WASN'T killed by David?

41 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.

But David never did, he let someone else do it.

43 Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.

He's taking credit for it, but it wasn't really him.

50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.

51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

Unto his seed for evermore. Abaslom, Amnon, the baby from Bathsheba; they apparently don't fall under this mercy.

2 Samuel 23

1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,

Just wait until we get to Psalms, the poetry of David will flow forth, fervently.

5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.

David is still under the impression that the Israel kingdom will forever be under his family's rule.

David then talks about his great warriors.

The first three:

Adino

8 These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time.

Eleazar

9 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:

Shammah

11 And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.

The next group:

Abishai

18 And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and had the name among three.

Benaiah

20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:

The final group:
  1. Asahel
  2. Elhanan
  3. Shammah
  4. Elika
  5. Helez
  6. Ira
  7. Abiezer
  8. Mebunnai
  9. Zalmon
  10. Maharai
  11. Heleb
  12. Ittai
  13. Benaiah
  14. Hiddai
  15. Abialbon
  16. Azmaveth
  17. Eliahba
  18. Jonathan
  19. Shammah
  20. Ahiam
  21. Eliphelet
  22. Eliam
  23. Hezrai
  24. Paarai
  25. Igal
  26. Bani
  27. Zelek
  28. Nahari
  29. Ira
  30. Gareb
  31. Uriah

Who am I missing from the list of 37?

2 Samuel 24

1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

God tells David to number Israel.

2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

Joab doesn't really want to do it, but David, being king, commands him to.

8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

The way those Joos breed, since it took 9 months, they will probably have to do it again.

9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

800,000 and 500,000, for a total of 1,300,000 men of fighting age.

10 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Not sure why he felt bad about doing it, but he did.

God then talks to Gad.

12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

God (through Gad) gives David three choices for his punishment.

DOOR NUMBER 1

7 years of famine

DOOR NUMBER 2

Being chased by enemies for 3 months

DOOR NUMBER 3

3 Days pestilence

David thinks it over and takes the punishment that gets over fastest.

15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.

The three days pestilence killed 70,000 people; I'm assuming that it wasn't offensive to God to number the dead.

16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

God repents of evil. Our LORD does evil... take that modern christianity!

18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

David goes and tries to buy the threshing floor of Araunah, who tries to give it to David, but David thinks he NEEDS to pay for it (even though his money came from tithes and taxes from the people), so David offers the guy 50 shekels of silver.

25 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

So what have we learned today?

1. David has a short memory (or was he just getting old) his war stories around the fireplace get more and more unbelievable as the years progress.
2. I remember this one time Adino killed 800 people all at once... eh, what'd ya say? those were the days, kids weren't so darn rebellious then.
3. 50 shekels will buy you a threshingfloor to build an altar to stop God from destroying city after city, why didn't Lot build an altar?

Praise God! That's ten Books down, only 56 left to go (and, with today's reading, we've really covered Psalm 18, too).

Cappo de Tutti Cappi

These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time. 2 Samuel 23:8

And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time. 1 Chronicles 11:11

Adino and Jashobeam were, of course, each chief of the captains at a different time. Adino slew 300 at once, which inspired Jashobeam to more than double that figure when his number was called.

The Leadership Secrets of David the King

And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD. And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men. 2 Samuel 23:15-17

David was so moved by the exertions of the three mighty men, who risked life and limb to obtain water to slake their King's thirst, that he poured the water upon the ground as a tribute. It was as if he were saying, "I am King announted by God, but even I am not worthy of this great gift you have brought to me." Can you imagine the love for David that this must have engendered within his armies?

The Great Censuses

And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah. 2 Samuel 24:1

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:1

Oh, the idiotic arguments I hear from nonbelievers on this one. There is no--and I mean no--contradiction here. They were two entirely separate censuses.

And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. 2 Samuel 24:9 (total of 1.3 million men)

And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.1 Chronicles 21:5 (a total of 1.57 million men)

See, I told you. They had to be different censuses, because they got different numbers. Now, some cynics have claimed that only 800,000 of the 1,100,000 men who drew sword in Israel were "valiant men," the rest being craven. Those same cynics have also said that only 470,000 of the 500,000 men of Judah were "men that drew sword." However, that interpretation, while it certianly would explain the discrepancies in the counts, completely ignores the fact that one census was ordered by God and the other by Satan.

Note that David's armies were of approximately the size of the current armed forces of the United States. That, no doubt, explains why the great President George W. Bush did not send more soldiers to Iraq--God had already told him that a million or so was sufficient to kick all the butt the Middle East could throw at us.

Did David Sin?

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.... So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? 2 Samuel 24:10-13

David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. 1 Kings 15:5

Did David sin by taking the censuses? No, of course not. David's only sin was arranging the death of Uriah, as is made plain in 1 Kings 15. Just because David told God that he had sinned does not mean that he had actually sinned. Nevertheless, God jumped on this opportunity to send a pestilence onto Israel, because you really do need to let the Jewboys know who's boss every now and then, pour encourager les autres.

How Many Years of Famine?

Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? 2 Samuel 24:13

So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee: Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:11-12

There is no contradiction here. First God offered seven years of famine, then David Jewed him down to three years. Of course, it made no difference to God, since, being omniscient, He already knew that David would choose the pestilence.

The Great And Constant Mercies of The Lord

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: 2 Samuel 24:14

And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil... 2 Samuel 24:16

God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of a man that he should repent. Numbers 23:19

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning... James 1:17

Brother V, I do believe you have pointed out one of the salient points about the Lord that the "liberal" churches just don't understand--God can commit evil. He can do anything He wants to do, because he is Omnipotent. Of course, He is always right, even when he changes His mind.

By staying the hand of the avenging angel after only 70,000 men died, God demonstrated that He is, truly, a merciful God, fully justifying the faith that David had placed in Him in 2 Samuel 24:14.

We get into some pretty tough theological waters with the question of God repenting Him of the evil, so I will take this slowly:

First, repent has two separate meanings here, and we should not confuse them. God did not repent in 2 Samuel 24:16 in the sense of man seeking a remission of sin. I mean, what was He going to do, sacrifice a lamb to Himself?. In this verse, God simply changed His mind.

Second, did God change His mind in 2 Samuel 24:16? Of course not. God was (and still is) onmiscient. He knew all along that he would repent of His pestilence upon Jerusalem after the death of the 70,000. Had he not known that, he would not have ordered the angel to demolish all of Jerusalem in the first place, but instead would have ordered the carnage stopped at 70,000 men right from the get-go.

Biblical Inflation?

So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 2 Samuel 24:24

So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight. 1 Chronicles 21:25

Two ways to interpret this. Conservatives say that a shekel of silver was much larger than a shekel of gold, such that each shekel of silver was worth 12 shekels of gold. Modernists simply point to the rampant inflation in ancient Israel (all the pillaging of neighboring tribes really jacks up the money supply quite quickly). In this modern view, between the time of 2 Samuel 24 and the time of 1 Chronicles 21, the price of threshingfloors had risen dramatically. Personally, I am comfortable with either explanation.

Remember from Exodus 30
12 When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.
13 This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs an half shekel shall be the offering of the LORD.

If you want to number the people without provoking God into smiting your nation with a plague, you have to offer the LORD half a shekel per person. God wasn't mad because David numbered the people; He was mad because David jooed Him out of 6.5 million shekels (or 130 million gerahs
