Honestly, I don't know what to make of this. A couple down the road from Freehold, claiming to be Christian, are marketing a board game that tells kids Bible stories. They claim it makes learning Bible stories fun. They started it in their Sunday School and eventually had several thousand copies produced.

The first problem I have is this idea of making Sunday School and Bible study "fun." The Bible is full of suffering. Did Jesus think it was "fun" to be crucified? Did the sinners who drowned when Noah escaped enjoy that? Kids should suffer to learn our Christian truths.

Then there is the big issue of sin. I have not seen the game but from the article it does not seem to focus on sin. Children should learn sin leads to hell. They should know parents will administer physical pain if they sin.

So, I'll need a little more convincing to decide if a board game is the way to teach kids the True Christian way.

I take your point, Mr Mayor. Frivolous games have no salvific value. I can't remember the great luminary who said it, but the words, "Remember how important sin is in the life of a Christian: If it were not for sin, Jesus would have died for nothing and that would be terrible."

A game, properly done, can be a great way of learning. At this time of year, I think of a my happy schooldays and the schoolyard game of "burning the witch" in which the youngest and ugliest girl would be caught by "The Pilgrims", stuck with pins until she confessed, and then marched to the stake, while the other half of the children "The Demons" tried to free her.

Wholesome fun for all and it kept our us fit as well as giving an appreciation of a Christian's duty and ethics.

If I recall correctly, in the 50s or 60s, someone came up with a board game that involved 2 dice, pieces in the shape of OT prophets, two piles of cards (Damnation and Salvation) and an electric shock machine... I'll see if I can find it in the basement.

My dear father's late mother was a great believer in starting her grandchildren's Bible studies with the Book of Job. My mom still recalls her - by which I mean Grandmama Allchurch's, not Mom's - delight when I spoke my first full sentence: Job 5:7 - Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

I have followed her method, knowing no other, and my children suffer from no delusional expectations of bowls of cherries.

It's not exactly fun, but I do get a sense of satisfaction when I see other people doing badly. Ha ha, losers. The positive sensations in my body are, I believe, a reward from God for my righteousness. Getting kids on board (excuse the pun) may get them on the road to Christ much quicker.
