Psalm 11-15

Psalm 11

1 In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

This sounds like it's gonna wind up being another, God please kill my enemies psalm.

2 For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.

I'm not sure who David is talking about, but it'll probably wind up being Saul.

4 The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD's throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

It's a Henry Kane moment.

6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

Yep, it's a "God punishes sinner" psalm.

7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

Combined with a "God loves me" psalm. That David, he's a master psalmist!

Psalm 12

3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

How does this fit into YOUR version of what you think God is?

6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
AMEN, when God says he's gonna do something, he does it!

Psalm 13

1 How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

I wonder what great trouble David was going through during this?

2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

David must've really been having a tough time.

4 Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

Ah, what a great way to ask the LORD to help you. This is the Kurt Warner method. If Kurt Warner doesn't win the super bowl, and he's the biggest christian football player out there, then it's proof that his god's way isn't the best.

Psalm 14

1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

If you aren't a True Christian ™ then absolutely nothing you do is good. If you give to charity, it's not because you want to help that charity, you are probably only doing it for a tax write-off. If you help an old lady across the street, it's probably to impress a girl so you can have sex. If you get a hybrid car, you aren't doing it to save the world, you are doing it to show off your good works.

3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

I do things for the right reason, to serve God. Can you say the same for everything you do?

4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.

Psalm 15

1 Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

Sounds like David's trying to coax God into removing Saul.

2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

I'm talking about me, David, son of Jesse, now... in case you didn't pick up on that LORD.

3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

This would OBVIOUSLY be before David sent Uriah off to die.

5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

David apparently doesn't remember the words to his songs.

So what have we learned today?

1. Like most rock stars who sing about things, they don't necessarily follow exactly their lyrics.

2. Unsaved people are stupid and are evil; additionally, nothing they do is worthy of praise.

3. God is in his Holy Temple.

These are my favorite Psalms! I get goosebumps everytime the Lord talks about punishing wicked sinners.

David wrote this one when he was on the run from Absalom. It's hard to keep track because the Psalms aren't given in any particular order, or at least none that we mere mortals can discern. I think Ezra might have dropped a big stack of them and they got shuffled.

Right. Everything an unsaved person does is a sin. When an unsaved person does a "good deed", it's just like a cheating husband coming home drunk with lipstick on his collar and reeking of another woman's perfume, trying to make up for it by giving his wife a handful of flowers he picked out of her garden on his way in the door.
