Default Day 228. Jeremiah 16-18 - 11-16-2009, 08:52 PM

Jeremiah 16-18

Jeremiah 16

2 Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.

God does care a little bit for Jeremiah, himself. He likes him so much, that he says to not have kids or a wife, because if they are born, they will just be taken away or killed like the rest of the people.

4 They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.

They shall not be lamented.

This is an interesting concept. Think of all the people who have died (or will die, if you are following the timeline). Their deaths are pretty much recorded in the Bible (KJV1611). However when we discuss their deaths, we do not do so with sorrow. We aren't sad that they are dead, we are to realize that (Romans 6:23) the wages of sin is death. We shouldn't feel sad, or remorse for these dead jews, they brought it upon themselves.

5 For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and mercies.

God has removed his lovingkindness and mercies.

Oddly enough, if you search for the word "endureth" it is used in the KJV1611 59 times. It is used 43 times with the word mercy. So, the next time someone mentions that God's mercy and lovingkindness endureth forever, remind them of Jeremiah 16:5, when the LORD's mercy was removed, creating a gap in the "forever". It's like forever, but it's not quite forever.

9 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.

God will do this in Jeremiah's lifetime.

10 And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?

Are the people really not that bright? That they have to ask what their sin was? All they have to do is look around; look there's an idol; look there's the temple and it's defiled.

11 Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law;

12 And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me:

If you just stopped at verse 11, you would think back to Deuteronomy 24:16 where it says the children shouldn't be put to death for the fathers sin (even though we are all cursed for Adam's sin); but God is punishing these people because they are even worse than their dads.

It's like rock music. My parents used to annoy their parents with the gyrating hips of Elvis; there was hidden messages in the music of using drugs and having sex. Now there are songs that are all about having sex and doing drugs.

13 Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favour.

You want to go worship other gods, fine, but don't do it in my land!

14 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;

People will say God (the real God) is dead, because he doesn't have a people anymore; and without people to worship them, gods die.

15 But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.

BUT, God's not dead, so he'll bring his people back.

18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things.

He's going to punish them, but he'll bring them back.

Jeremiah 17

1 The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;

Wow, that's going to last longer than a sharpie.

4 And thou, even thyself, shalt discontinue from thine heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn for ever.

God's going to make it happen, that's a recurring theme.

7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

Of course, there aren't any of those men left.

10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Just like in Sodom, there wasn't anyone other than Jeremiah (Lot) who was worth saving.

God is now going to give Judah one last chance. Destruction is coming, God knows it. God is now going to turn off his ability to know everything that is going to happen. For the next week (in Jeremiah) God is going to allow actual free will. God is going to allow himself to be surprised. Remember, freewill means that you can do something that God doesn't know is going to happen. God has the ability to TIVO something before it's on tv, and can watch it whenever he wants. He's never surprised... he's allowing himself to be.

19 Thus said the LORD unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;

Go stand in the gates, and say to everyone...

21 Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;

Those good old sabbath laws. Don't do any work, don't let anyone else do any work. Remember in Numbers 15:36, a man was stoned to death for gathering sticks on the sabbath. God didn't necessarily want anyone killed (well, he did) he wanted people to follow the sabbath... just once.

22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

The people didn't listen to Jeremiah as he was telling the people not to work on the sabbath.

If they did, just that one weekend...

25 Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever.

Just that once, if the people would listen and follow the sabbath, the kings would return awesomely, and Jerusalem would be awesome for ever.

27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

Instead, they'll be royally screwed.

Jeremiah 18

Jeremiah is going to do some more performance art.

2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

So Jeremiah goes down to the potters house, and he sees the potter working in the clay. The first pot the guy makes doesn't turn out great, so he starts again, and this time it comes out right. Jeremiah then speaks for God saying:

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

Of course, we don't know how many people were around Jeremiah. It was probably just the potter there. Anyone else there, was a mocker, as there were no wise people left in the land who followed the LORD.

11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

God, knows everyone won't change. So, it's just odd that he tells the people to return. He acts as though they have a chance to repent, but we've already seen that he's not going to accept any of their prayers, so all the acts that Jeremiah does are not for the benefit of the people; they are just done so that God can sit there and exclaim how great he is, even though only Jeremiah is listening.

15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

Because...

17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

God's going to punish them.

18 Then said they, Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

The people are now talking against Jeremiah. That's not so bad.

19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

Give the LORD good heed.

23 Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

Remember, the people are talking bad about Jeremiah; so he prays that God will destroy them. Remember, God earlier told him not to attempt to be like Moses or Samuel and be an intercessor. Jeremiah is taking that "don't be an intercessor" command one step further and is actively praying for the people to be destroyed. PRAISE JESUS!!!

So what have we learned today?

1. Jeremiah is told not to marry and have kids, because he'll lose them. Oddly, if he had them, God wouldn't give him newer better ones, like he did to Job.

2. God's pen is diamond tipped. God also wants good heed.

3. If you aren't being an intercessor be like Jeremiah and ask for destruction instead of salvation.
