Psalm 136-140

Psalm 136

The first Psalm for today is a Call and Response. The response is "for his mercy endureth for ever". Now when you read this, make sure that your eyes don't glaze over each time "for his mercy endureth forever" is said. It's there because it's important. I don't want you to say "for his mercy endureth forever" in a dull monotone, that you hear when you go to a church and they do a reading and response, i don't want it to be that dull low mumble that doesn't make any sense, when you say "for his mercy endureth for ever" it needs to have meaning. "For his mercy endureth for ever" needs to be said with enthusiasm. "For his mercy endureth for ever" needs to be said vigorously. There are 26 verses in Psalm 136.

Psalm 137

1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Oh, a taken away into captivity psalm. Sweet!

3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

Why did the Babylonians require a song? Probably because they were making jews walk hundreds of miles and they were tired of listening to them whine and complain like a jew. "fine, you want to make noise so much, sing us a song!!!"

4 How shall we sing the LORD's song in a strange land?

The LORD has a song? How come we don't know the LORD's song? Did the jews lose that too?

Instead, the jews sang a song of the destruction of Babylon, how nice to sing to your new captors, they probably sang it in a different language that didn't sound like they were planning on killing them.

8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

For his mercy
endureth
for ever.

Remember, abortion is murder and should never be done. Killing babies after they are born is perfectly acceptable.



Psalm 138

1 I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

Note the lower case gods. Remember, it's a relatively new concept that there is only one god. Even the hebrews recognized that there were other gods.

6 Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

God must have some of that annointing oil on him.

Psalm 139

1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

Not a "go in unto" kind of "known", the "known" where you understand.

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

God is everywhere.

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

Wait, what? God is in hell? I thought hell was the place without God. God is a hands on kind of God. God has his thone up in heaven, and he just goes and slums a bit in hell. I guess that's where the fun is.

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Sex is something wonderful, and we should all be afraid of it, perhaps that's why I cry most of the time when I've completed the act?

19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

Praise God, once again, he smites my enemies!

21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

Ponder this i must. mmmm

22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

Once again, we come across something that goes against all modern christian teachings. We are commanded to hate those that hate the LORD. YOU LIE!!!

Psalm 140

1 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

Dear God, save me.

6 I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.

and you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile...

7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

In reading the Bible (KJV1611) you come across some things that stand out. Sometimes it's the use of words, sometimes its the way they are spelled, sometimes, it's the capitalization. In this case, it's the capitalization. I don't think I've seen GOD in all caps before. This usage must be important.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

Dear God, smite my enemies. Wow, just realized that picture of Kim Phuc is an image of heaping burning coals while dashing the little ones against the stones. It's even more appropriate than I imagined.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

And... and... and... hot coals should fall on the heads of the bad.

So what have we learned today?

1. Killing babies is fun!

2. Burning coals is torture (it will be revisited again in Romans).

3. For his mercy endureth for ever.
