Default Day 151. Job 31-33 - 06-06-2008, 08:40 PM

Job 31-33

Today we get:
  • Job finishes talking to his friends
  • A young whippersnapper thinks he can talk to an old guy

Job 31

4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

Job is now starting to ask God why he's picking on him.

9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

"laid wait at neighbour's door", sounds like David and Bathsheba to me.

10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

Eeew. Job is talking about his wife grinding on another, as though she's a stripper working a lap dance. Once step away from being a prostitute.

13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

Job says something really smart here, that people should take note of. If a person is mean and rotten to his subordinates, why should he expect any different treatment from his superiors.

15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

Job says isn't everyone just another soul to the LORD? One more person to be either saved or flung into the pit of hell. Everyone is the same in the eyes of the LORD. ...

Except this isn't quite true, just from the reading of this book in the Bible (KJV1611) we know that it's not true. Job's family was put on the earth to be killed by Satan. Job was worth more than his kids to the LORD. Remember, when there's a lesson to be learned from the LORD you want to be the person who learns, not the experiment.

Job then goes on to state that he's a good person. (Salvation by works)

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

Some day, I'm going to end a speech with "The words of V are ended!"

Thank you for coming, we love you, good night!

Ladies and gentlemen, Job has now left the building.

Job 32

1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

Job's three buddies, realize that they can't get him to change his mind, so they just shut up.

2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

Where the hell did Elihu show up from? Was here there all along?

3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

So Elihu is mad at Job, and the others.

The watchword of Job 32 is "kindled".

4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.

We dont' know exactly how old Job and the others are. Normally it's thought that Job was right around 40 when this all started. So, wisdom comes at 40... maybe. So Elihu was younger than 40.

Remember, one can have youthful indescritions well into middle age.

5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.

Yes, Elihu's wrath was kindled, we got that.

7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

He didn't say anything before, because he figured one of the OLD guys would come up with the solution.

9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

Well, there's no need to start insulting the old guys. Unless you need to slap them around to get their attention. Which it probably is needed, since so far we've had about 25 chapters of the same damn thing.

13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.

This is the central tenant of Elihu's statement. Pay attention.

13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.

Did you get that?

13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.

Then Elihu mentions that he was a nice young man and waited until everyone was done talking before he should say something. Otherwise, he'd have been told "excuse me young man, the ADULTS are talking" and he'd have been shown to the kids table.

Job 33

1 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

Remember, elders didn't have to listen to youngsters. Job made this clear earlier in Job 29:8 when he mentioned that young people hid from him and old people rose to get out of his way.

3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

At least he hopes he can make his message come across clearly. You ever have a drunk guy tell you the way things go... they normally start out their statements the same way the Elihu just did.

8 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

Elihu heard Job say... (over and over and over)

9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

26 He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

29 Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,

Elihu sums up most of Job's arguments, and now he's going to lay the smack down on Job.

32 If thou hast anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.

33 If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

And that wisdom is...

So what have we learned today?

1. Job said all he's gonna say and he ain't gonna say no more.

2. The youngster Elihu's anger was kindled and he just couldn't hold his peace any more.

One of Job's professions was as rancher. As he had lots of camels, oxen, asses, and sheep.

Job 1: 3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

During this period, he was unemployed and sitting around a campfire, and oozing some puss from his gaping wounds.

But his family died and all his stuff was either killed or taken away on the same day.

So he was probably unemployed. However, he should have had a fortune saved up, but we'll never know if Satan touched his savings account.

Thanks for the question Sister Sue.
