Default Day 271. Micah 1-3 - 02-08-2011, 06:25 PM

Micah 1-3

Micah 1

1 The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

Today and tomorrow we get to hear from the prophet Micah. He was from Moresheth-Gath that was in the Philistine Plain. His name is shortened from Micaiahu, which means "Who is like Yahweh?". Not saying he is like God, he's asking if anyone else is like God. Since he lasted through the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, he was around from at least 737 to 690 BC. He was around during Senacherib's invasion of Judah. He was a contemporary of Jeremiah, and Isaiah.

5 For the transgression of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they not Jerusalem?

Micah didn't just prophecy because of idol worship, he had another cause, but first we have the idolatry.

7 And all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay desolate: for she gathered it of the hire of an harlot, and they shall return to the hire of an harlot.

There are several themes that the prophets used as to why God decided he'd have both kingdoms destroyed. The first one that we see here is because of idol worship. God was pissed about people having false gods in front of him.

The second major theme is that the people didn't trust solely in God to save them. God was upset about the people asking Egypt to help save them (Jeremiah touched on this; as did Ezekiel). God was upset that his people were forming alliances, both with Egypt and Assyria (Lamentations 5:6)

We'll get to a new third reason in a second.

10 Declare ye it not at Gath, weep ye not at all: in the house of Aphrah roll thyself in the dust.

If you remember back to Day 268, Amos 7-9, in Amos 8:2, when he talked about summer fruit, and summer is ending, "Kayts is kets" Micah is going to do something similar.

Aphrah means dust. So he's telling the people of dust to roll themselves in dust.

11 Pass ye away, thou inhabitant of Saphir, having thy shame naked: the inhabitant of Zaanan came not forth in the mourning of Bethezel; he shall receive of you his standing.

Zaanan means "come out". Saphir means "beautiful". So you see Micah's saying the pretty residents will be shamed (ugly). The people of Come out, can't come out.

12 For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.

Maroth means "bitterness", so the people waited for good, but got bitterness.

13 O thou inhabitant of Lachish, bind the chariot to the swift beast: she is the beginning of the sin to the daughter of Zion: for the transgressions of Israel were found in thee.

Lachish was relatively close to Egypt and would have been the area where King Hezekiah would have last stopped at before heading to(or held meetings in) Egypt. This was one of the above sins. That they didn't trust in God, and made a pact with Egypt. Hence the "beginning of the sin".

14 Therefore shalt thou give presents to Moreshethgath: the houses of Achzib shall be a lie to the kings of Israel.

Achzib means "lying" or "disappointing". Achzib was probably named from a winter spring (snow runoff) that failed in summer. It would just be odd to name a town disappointing. Although it does sound like something that should be in Utah.

15 Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel.

Mareshah means possession. Adullam means ornament.

16 Make thee bald, and poll thee for thy delicate children; enlarge thy baldness as the eagle; for they are gone into captivity from thee.

There's the eagle (Babylon) again.

So, Micah 1 was all about using city names to convey to the people the bad things that were going to happen. The prophet said things that were easy for people to understand.

Micah 2

1 Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

This chapter is all about the next sin that the people committed.

2 And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

Corporate farming is one of the sins that caused God to reject Israel.

4 In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.

If you remember, all the land was divided up between families (Joshua 18). "Portion of my people" refers directly to the land being divided by lots. Joshua 18:10 And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions. God wasn't happy that people were changing around the way the land was changed. God likes small family farms. He doesn't like corporate farming. It may be a more efficient way for people to get foods to market, but it makes people lazy.

Part of the reason he was mad was because the corporate farmers had a lot of money and they were using the courts and crooked judges to get favorable outcomes and evict the rightful heirs from the farms.

9 The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.

The family farms were to be in the family for ever. Because of the crooked judges, the rightful heirs weren't able to keep their land.

This loss of land leads to the sacrifices that meant nothing. Originally each person had their land, they raised their sheep, the did everything there. With the corporate farming, sheep for sacrifice were sold in town (remember, Jesus was pissed about this too) and even inside the temple (the moneychangers). With the loss of the family farm, that led to increase in the size of cities. And when cities get larger, that leads to more corruption, crime, and other bad things. God (through Micah) knows that almost all the evils in society would go away if family farms were brought back.

Micah 3

1 And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment?

2 Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;

This is in reference to the judges who were helping the corporate farmers increase their land holdings.

5 Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.

There were also prophets who weren't of the LORD, who were just saying good things. A real prophet very rarely prophesies good things. When they do, it's only in some sort of vague future. When they prophesy bad things, it's usually pretty soon.

12 Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

So, because of the bad judges and bad prophets, Jerusalem is going to be destroyed.

So what have we learned today?

1. God uses city names and descriptions to say what's going to happen... like Niagra Falls shall fall, Springfield shall spring, Normal shall stay even.

2. God hates corporate farmers. I can't believe Westboro hasn't capitalized on this yet.

3. God hates crooked judges and bad prophets.

So even back in Micah times activist judges were persecuting God's Chosen Elect™. How long as liberalism been a problem for humanity?

Time to reclaim our FREEDOM from the “Mullah in Chief” and his growing activist voter hoards of socialists, communists, anti-Semites, anti-Christians, atheists, radical gays and lesbians, feminists, illegal immigrants, Muslims, anti-Anglo whites and others.

While watching the interview with Obama and O'reilly before the superbowl, I saw Bill ask several times if Barack Hussein Obama was becoming more centrist. The entire time I was thinking about this verse in Isaiah.

Isaiah 32:8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

What's the verse before that one?

7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

Liberalism is clearly evil. It's been so for a long time.
