Default Day 351: Hebrews 10-13 - 12-10-2016, 09:29 PM

Chapter 10
1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Basically, the author here is saying that the Jews were never going to get it right because the system that was set up, the system they were told to follow in faith, would never work. The bible doesn’t tell us if this is why Jews are so suspicious and cunning today, but it would make sense (Hebrews 10-2-13)

4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

There’s nothing inherent in the quality of the blood of farm animals that would take away sin, so the Jews’ sacrifices were useless. The Jews didn’t know this before, so God is telling them now. Jesus fulfills the Old Testament's foreshadowing of the perfect sacrifice, once and for all (Hebrews 10:5-14).

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Just as the new covenant does away with the old, the new sacrifice does away with the old. It’s a new and improved relationship thanks to Jesus (Hebrews 10:17-25).

26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

If you sin after you’ve accepted Christ’s sacrifice, you’re screwed for all eternity because there are no second chances. You can expect to burn in Hell with the rest of God’s enemies (Hebrews 10:27-31).

38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

If you’re a True Christian™, you’ll be able to avoid sin because you’ll naturally live by faith. If you sin, it means you never did accept Christ’s sacrifice in the first place. You lied to yourself and you lied to God.

Chapter 11
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is assuming to know something you can’t know anything about and hoping you’re right. It is trusting God to be right, even though He misled the Jews for 3000 years.

4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

The Old Testament doesn’t say anything about Abel’s faith (Genesis 4:4), but no matter. We know now. The bible doesn’t tell us if Cain ever learned this, but he became pretty successful anyway (Genesis 4:15-22) and don’t get too distracted by this story. The point is, lots of people in the Old Testament had faith in God (Hebrews 11:5-12).

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

This is important and bears repeating. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. It does not matter how compassionate you are, how helpful you are to your fellow man, how selfless, giving, responsible, productive, or decent you are. If you don’t have faith, God is very cross with you and happily toss your soul into the burning fires of hell for all eternity for your impudence.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

People who live in faith are longing only to get to heaven. They think of life on earth like having to tolerate staying at a truck stop for a few hours or days before getting to their final destination. This is why issues like being “true to yourself” or helping people with physical or emotional needs are ultimately a waste of time. In the long run, you won’t care what your stay at the truck stop was like (Hebrews 11:14-16).

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

Abraham had faith and so didn’t worry about terrorizing his young son on a mountain top. According to his faith, God would raise Isaac up after death and they would laugh it off later. And in a way that’s kind of what happened, figuratively anyway. And so God was pleased, not just with Abraham, but with everyone who lived by faith, even in the Old Testament. You see, people who lived by faith in the Old Testament were keeping their eyes on the horizon for Jesus but they didn’t know that (Hebrews 11:18-38).

39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

God wants these words to sustain us in times of trial, temptation, and persecution. He wants us to remember always that if He can help out a bunch of Jews, how much more will He do for True Christians™.

Chapter 12
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Life is like a race. Get rid of anything that weighs you down unnecessarily and keep your eyes on the prize. That’s what Jesus did, so look to Him for motivation (Hebrews 12:2-3).

4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

No time for pity-parties so suck it up, buttercup. God is giving you what’s good for you. No one likes to be corrected, but being correct always feels best (Hebrews 12:6-11).

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
Shake it off and keep going, whatever “it” is.
14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Help each other out. Don’t be shy to call out a whiner or a lazy bum. Don’t be like Esau who took the easy way out for a temporary comfort (Hebrews 12: 15-17).

26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

At one time God spoke from the mountain. His voice was so powerful that the people below the mountain trembled (Exodus 19:16). His presence was so powerful that should a beast touch any part of the mountain, it should be killed (Exodus 19:12). Today the voice of God shakes not only the earth, but heaven as well. Mind your manners and follow directions. God is not to be trifled with. Show due respect (Hebrews 12:18-29).

Chapter 13
1 Let brotherly love continue.

Here's is a list of ways to treat fellow True Christians™, and a reminder to mind your pastors (Hebrews 13:2-9).

10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
11 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.

In the same way the Jews discarded the bodies of the animals sacrificed on the altar outside the camp, they discarded Christ Himself. Let them walk away from Salvation, we’ll go with Christ all the way to heaven (Hebrews 13:12-15).
