Default Day 101. 1 Kings 16-18 - 12-22-2007, 06:55 PM

1 Kings 16-18

Today we get:
  • Bad Bad Bad kings!
  • God feeds Elijah
  • Elijah and the prophets of Baal

1 Kings 16

1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying,

When God sends a prophet who talks bad about you, you pretty much gotta figure you are in trouble.

Remember, Baasha was the guy who killed Nadab and the entire remaining family of Jeroboam.

3 Behold, I will take away the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Wait, there is no house of Jeroboam left... oh, I see what God is gonna do.

4 Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.

Having dogs eat you is one of the signs that you definitely NOT succeeded in this world.

6 So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his stead.

Next king of Israel, Elah.

7 And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him.

Let's read that verse closely.

1. Jehu brought the word of the LORD against Baasha, and his family.
2. Because of the evil that Baasha did.
3. It provoked God's anger.
4. Just like Jeroboam.
5. Now this last section is tricky. "and because he killed him". Does this mean that God killed Baasha, or is this because Baasha killed Jeroboam? As the "h" in "he" isn't capitalized, I'd have to assume that the "he" that did the killing is Baasha, and not the LORD.

9 And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.

The "he" in this verse, getting drunk was King Elah.

10 And Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his stead.

So Zimri killed Elah the king.

11 And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.

Zimri did some good killing. Not only did he kill the disrespecters, but he also killed Elah's family AND friends. If you knew Elah, you were probably worried about Zimri coming to kill you.

12 Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake against Baasha by Jehu the prophet.

Remember that prophet in verse 1? His words came true, therefore, by the LORD's definition, he's a prophet of the LORD.

15 In the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. And the people were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.

Zimri was king for 7 days, then Omri (the top general) was proclaimed king by the people.

Omri takes the army to Tirzah, Zimri sees them coming and flees into his palace.

18 And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king's house, and burnt the king's house over him with fire, and died.

This was one of the shortest reigns. Granted it only took Zimri 7 days to exterminate Elah, but Omri got rid of him in less than a month.

19 For his sins which he sinned in doing evil in the sight of the LORD, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.

Even though he was only king for a short while, he was still evil to the LORD.

After Zimri's death, the people divided in two. (So there were 3 factions, Judah, and the 2 halves of the northern kingdom)

Half the people followed Tibni, and half followed Omri... That is, until Omri killed Tibni.

25 But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all that were before him.

And the people shall say "Omri, worst king EVER!"

26 For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger with their vanities.

He did the same things as Jeroboam, and even ADDED to the bad things.

Then he died, Ahab his son became king after.

30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him.

And the people shall say "Ahab, worst king EVER!"

31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

So, Jeroboam may have felt wrong about doing his sins, but by the time it got to Ahab, the people didn't feel any remorse over it. It's like the lessening of television standards. Back during I Love Lucy, Lucy and Ricardo slept in different beds. Gradually, people stopped saying "white meat" and started saying "breast". The two beds became one. And now on network tv you can see homos kissing each other. How much longer until we see live sodomy during prime time on CBS?

Ahab built an altar to Baal.

33 And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.

Ahab REALLY ticked off the LORD.

1 Kings 17

1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Elijah tells king Ahab that there will be 3 years of drought. Ahab gets PISSED.

God (knowing Ahab is angry) tells Elijah to go hid at the brook Cherith.

4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

So, Elijah goes to the brook and stays there.

6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

When the LORD recommends you go into exile, he provides with bread meat and water.

7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

At least he provides it until the water goes away.

9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

God then tells Elijah to go to Zarephath, and a woman will take over the job of the ravens.

Elijah makes it to Zarephath, sees a widow and asks her from some bread and some water. The woman replies that she only has a little bit left, enough to make the last meal for her and her son, and that after they eat it, they will just sit there and wait to die.

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

The lady is thinking shes going to die any time now, and Elijah tells her that she's to make her a cake first, then she can go and die.

14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

She probably figured "what have I got to lose" there's just a handful left.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

The entire time Elijah stayed with her, everyday, there was enough meal and oil to make bread, PRAISE JESUS!!! It's like the loaves and fishes, without loaves and fishes.

During his stay, the woman's son got sick and died.

The woman is like, "why did you come here to eat my bread, if you are only going to let God kill my son".

Elijah takes the dead boy up to his room, prays to God, and then...

21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

Modern hospitals need to learn that the best way to resuscitate dead people is to pray, and lay on the dead body, 3 times.

God heard Elijah's prayers, and gave the boy back his life. Elijah takes the boy downstairs and shows the widow.

24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

Apparently miraculously eating for months on end on one dinners supply of meal and oil wasn't enough to convince her, but bringing back the dead, that REALLY shows people that you are a man of the LORD.

1 Kings 18

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

Remember, Ahab was REALLY mad at Elijah.

So Elijah goes and runs into Obadiah.

3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

When that bitch Jezebel made Ahab build the altar to Baal, she demanded the prophets be killed, so Obadiah hid 100 of them in two caves.

Obadiah and Elijah finally meet up, and Elijah tells Obadiah to go tell Ahab that he wants to talk to him.

9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

Obadiah realizes that if he tells Ahab that Elijah is coming, and if Elijah doesn't show up, that Ahab will have Obadiah killed.

13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

Yeah, yeah, you were a good guy, hiding the 100 prophets, 50 in a cave, now go tell Ahab that Elijah is on his way!

15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

That promise was good enough for Obadiah, so he goes and tells Ahab.

17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

Elijah claims it wasn't him that caused the famine, it was Ahab (and the kings before him) who disrespected the LORD (pissed against the wall) that caused the rain to stop.

19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

Elijah wants to take on 850 prophets of Baal and the groves at mount Carmel. There's gonna be a showdown!

Ahab calls together the prophets and all the people of Israel to Carmel to watch the events.

22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

Apparently the grove prophets couldn't make it.

23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

Oh, a sacrifice showdown!

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

Whichever god (or God) can start a fire, that one will be the god (or God).

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

Elijah was nice enough to let the others go first.

26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

Baal doesn't exist. It's hard for something that doesn't really live to respond.

27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

That Elijah, he's a jokester. Telling the prophets of Baal that their god is taking a nap, or is too busy, or is on vacation, and that's why he can't start the fire.

To get Baal's attention:

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

They became emo. I'm sure this probably looked like one of those catholic easter processions where they walk down the street beating themselves with whips and cutting themselves with glass. Or like one of those mudslime parades where the guys have pins through their faces, and cut themselves with knives and have scars and stuff. (funny, their gods don't exist either).

29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

They failed.

So Elijah asks the people to come watch him at work.

Elijah takes 12 stones and builds an altar to the LORD (the stones represented the 12 tribes).

Then he dug a trench around the altar, then put the wood on the altar, and cut up the sacrifice and put it on the altar.

Then when everything was just right, he had the people fill 4 barrels with water and pour it over everything.

34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

To prove that HIS God was best, not only did he try to do the same thing as the 450 Baal prophets, but he was gonna do it with wood that was soaking wet.

36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

Elijah prayed to God, not to Baal, not to Mary, not to Allah (peanut butter sammiches) but to the LORD!

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

The fire took the bullock, and the wood, and burned the stones, and the dirt and even burned the water!

39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

Even though the LORD is all around, the people of Israel needed to see God burn up a soaked sacrifice for them to remember Him. Like the widow, they needed proof. Friends, I don't need proof, Elijah didn't have proof, Elijah had FAITH!

40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

PRAISE JESUS!!! After the LORD's display of fiery might, Elijah had those 450 prophets of Baal killed (there's no word on what happened to the 400 grove prophets).

Elijah then tells Ahab that it's gonna rain.

Elijah sends Ahab up to the top of Carmel to look at the sea. Ahab comes down and says "I don't see any rain". Elijah sends him up another 6 times.

44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.

Due to the drought, Ahab didn't have all weather tires on his chariot, so Elijah told him to head home fast before he had no traction on the chariot.

45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

Like the first snowfall of the year, the first rain of three years probably caused a lot of traffic accidents.

46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

The LORD made it so that Elijah could run faster than Ahab's chariot.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

So what have we learned today?

1. Israel had successively horrible kings, each worse than the previous.
2. Laying on a dead body 3 times will revive them.
3. Elijah had faith, the prophets of Baal also had faith; however, our LORD had works, Baal was on vacation; so we learn, FAITH without WORKS is dead (just like the prophets of Baal!)

Glory, another powerful reading of the Word, Brother V.

On Baasha, On Asa, On Prancer, On Vixen...

So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his stead.... In the twenty and sixth year of Asa king of Judah began Elah the son of Baasha to reign over Israel in Tirzah, two years. 1 Kings 16:6-8

In the six and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah, and built Ramah.... 2 Chronicles 16:1

How did Baasha war upon Judah in the 36th year of Asa's reign, when Baasha seems to have died and Baasha's son Elah became king of Israel in the 26th year of Asa's reign in Judah? Simple--Baasha so loved Elah that he appointed Elah co-king of Israel during the 26th year of Asa's reign. They ruled together for 10 years, then Baasha died. Elah went on to rule 2 years as sole king of Israel.

Wall Pissers, Beware!

And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends. 1 Kings 16:11

People laugh when I tell them that the should not piss against the wall. Well, none of the house of Baasha are laughing anymore! WALL PISSERS, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Damned Careless Jews

Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his treason that he wrought, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 1 Kings 16:20

Once again, we are reminded that Jews are not to be trusted. How, exactly, did the Jews lose entire books of the Bible, anyway? Didn't they squirrel away several copies in a remote cave for safekeeping?

Ah, well, at least they didn't lose Leviticus. If they had, then we'd all really be screwed, committing all kinds of sins (e.g., sacrificing children to Molech) without even knowing that they were sins.

The First That Should Rise From The Dead

And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 1 Kings 17:22

That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead. Acts 26:23

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood... Revelation 1:5

Here, Luke (author of Acts) and John (author of Revelation) refer to Christ as the first Christian who has risen from the dead. Of course, Jesus was not the first person to rise from the dead, as we see in 1 Kings 17 (and 2 Kings 4, 2 Kings 13, Matthew 9, Luke 7, and John 11) not to mention the raising of the ghosts of the dead in 1 Samuel 28 and Luke 9 (where we get a twofer, both Moses and Elias).

Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name.... Jeremiah 10:25

A few years back, in the lab session of Professor Greene's Biblical Chemistry class at Landover Christian University, we did this experiment, calling on Baal to light the fire. No fire was lit, providing independent verification of this claim of the Bible.

If Baal does exist, then he must be more of a steak tartare man than a real, meat-and-potatoes loving god like God. 8)

I still think it'd be a good idea to have a televised miracle beatdown between God and Baal's modern-day successor, Allah. Maybe Jerry Boykin could be God's prophet?

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

That's not a good idea. It's a great idea. It's kind of like the way Landover Baptist has offered a billion dollar prize to anyone who can prove that God does not exist. We've seen the usual athiests and other psychopaths roll through, but not one who has actual, scientific evidence that refutes the existence of God. You'd think that if God didn't exist, at least one person would be sufficiently enticed by $1 billion to come out and prove it.

And our cause could use a few more men like Gen. Boykins in the public eye. Damned straight, our God is way more impressive than theirs.

The fire took the bullock, and the wood, and burned the stones, and the dirt and even burned the water!
When I was a child, my parents sent me to a summer camp ran by liberal Presbyterians. The leaders brought us all to the outdoor chapel and told us the story of Elijah vs. the prophets of Baal.

There was a firepit loaded up with wood at the front of the chapel. After the minister told the story, the camp counselors proceeded to douse the wood with a bucket full of liquid that they claimed was water. Then the minister had us all bow our heads while he prayed for God to set the wood on fire. When the prayer was over, everyone lifted their heads and saw the wood all ablaze.

However, I was sitting on the front row, and I knew what gasoline smelled like. That certainly wasn't water they poured on the wood. My front row seat was also close enough that I could hear the match being struck during the prayer. The "god" that false preacher was praying to was no more real than the one the prophets of Baal prayed to.

I praise God everyday that I am away from that false faith, and I have found the real Jesus.

Upon request I will cite scripture for all these facts in God's Holy Word.

✝ This is a Christian community and we worship GOD of the Holy bible, the only Living GOD. We worship Jesus Christ, Son of GOD and Savior. Anything else is absurd. ✝
