Default Day 238. Jeremiah 46-48 - 12-10-2009, 06:31 PM

Jeremiah 46-48

Jeremiah 46

1 The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles;

The gentiles here are Egypt.

2 Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.

This is somewhat confusing. Lets see if we can make sense of it.

Pharaohnecho is is Necho II. According to 2 Kings 23:29 he killed Josiah at the battle of Megiddo in 609. The 609 battle was between Egypt and Babylon. Originally Josiah had sided with Egypt, but then changed sides. Necho pretty much won the battle in 609.

This caused Jehoahaz to be made king. Necho then deposed of Jehoahaz and appointed Jehoiakim as king. In the fourth year of Jehoiakim (605) Necho went to go fight against Babylon. This battle was at Carchemish (by the Euphrates). The battle was supposed to slow or stop the Babylonian Empires advance west, and to stop it's trade route on the Euphrates.

People claim this chapter was written in 608, three years before the battle of Carcemish in 605. It's pretty exact for being prophecy. As a prophecy, this is actual history written before it happened.

8 Egypt riseth up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.

Egypt had planned to go up to Carchemish and kick some Babylonian butt.

10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

God demands this war. God wants this to happen.

13 The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.

God is going to let Egypt win this one. Why? God, and Jeremiah kind of like Josiah.

14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.

Egypt will lose.

16 He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.

It sounds like Egypt is seriously going to get their butt kicked.

20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.

North East, to be exact.

24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

Egypt is going to be carried away like Judah.

27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

In the 605 battle, Judah isn't to be afraid of being carried away, Babylon will go through and take out Egypt, all Judah has to do is sit there and watch it happen.

28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.

Although... they do deserve some punishment.

Jeremiah 47

1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.

Ok, when did Pharaoh smite Gaza? Which pharaoh was this?

This was Pharaoh Hophra, or Apries. He was Pharaoh from 589 to 570, so his reign covered the time of the destruction of Jerusalem and of the remnants moving to Egypt. This chapter is commonly believed to have been written in 588. He may have fought against Palestine as he was leaving the 605 battle, and was angry that they didn't help him.

2 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.

This was during the siege by the Babylonians. Palestine was small, in order to go after Judah, the Chaldeans would have had to have gone through palestine.

4 Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.

God is going to punish the Philistines. They deserve it. They deserved it then, they deserve it now.

Jeremiah 48

1 Against Moab thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.

The final judgment against Moab. This would have been written in 605. Moab disappeared from earth sometime during the Persian Empire. The people vanished. The area they occupied was known as Moab up until at least the time of the crusades. The final known ruler of Moab was Chemosh-Haleth in roughly 590. In 582 it became part of the Babylonian empire. In 539 the Persians took it over.

2 There shall be no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.

The destruction of the people of Moab was complete, no one today even claims to be a lost Moabite.

7 For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.

Moab had a lot of false gods.

15 Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.

I'm not sure if Jeremiah is bemoaning their destruction, or if he's really happy about it.

17 All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!

Bemoaning it is.

31 Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall mourn for the men of Kirheres.

Since this is prophecy, that means that Jeremiah is speaking for God. That means that God is sad about what he's about to do to Moab. Not sad enough to change his plan, but sad none-the-less.

38 There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the LORD.

God will break them like a vessel; but he's not happy about it.

47 Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

Will Moab be coming back later... it's been 2,600 years and they aren't back yet.

So what have we learned today?

1. God kind of hated the Egyptians.

2. God really hated the Philistines (palestine).

3. God especially hated the Moabites.
