Bible Days 356-357: 1 John 1-5 - 12-22-2016, 03:46 AM

Chapter 1

Apostle John doesn't waste his time on customary greetings and similar things. Instead, he gets directly down to business - and he really knows how to drill a single issue over and over and over again.

In the beginning, there was the Word of Life (1 John 1:1). John (he uses the royal "we" a lot) saw it manifest in Jesus, so we should trust him when he talks about God and Jesus (1 John 1:2-3). John is sending us the message from Jesus (1 John 1:4-5). God and Jesus are light (1 John 1:6-7) - of course in a totally non-gnostic, non-manicheistic sort of way. We have to admit to and confess our past sins (1 John 1:8-10).

Chapter 2

The point is: do not sin:

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Not sinning is the way to go if we want Jesus to love us (1 John 2:2-5). We should walk like Jesus walked (2 John 2:6).

John is giving us a new commandment which is not new at all:

1 John 2:7-8
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

We need to love each other among True Christians™ (1 John 2:9-11). John is writing to the kids whose sins were washed with Jesus' blood and to the old people who actually saw Jesus in flesh, in action, and to the young men because they are strong and can overcome temptation (1 John 2:12-14).

We have to love God, not the world (1 John 2:15-17).

Apostle John is speaking directly to us when he says that we are living in the End Days:

1 John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

This is IT, people. Jesus is coming really, really, really soon!

Those who left the True Faith™ did it because they weren't really True Believers™ in the first place:

1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

We True Christians™ know the Truth™; that's why John is writing to us (1 John 2:20-21). Only a liar would deny that Jesus is our Savior (1 John 2:22-23). Follow the Father and the Son, and you'll be Saved™ (1 John 2:24-26). We have been anointed, we have to obey, because all righteousness comes from God (1 John 2:26-27).

Chapter 3

God loves us and only us:

John 3:1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

We are pure sons of God (John 3:2-3). While acting against the law is a sin (John 3:4), Jesus takes away our sins (John 3:5). In fact, True Christians™ cannot sin:

1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

Righteous people do righteous things (1 John 3:7), and people of the devil do devilish things (1 John 3:8, 10). In fact, True Christians™ are simply incapable of sinning:

1 John 3:
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

True Christians™ should love one another (1 John 3:11, 14). Cain is an example of a bad person, while Abel was righteous (1 John 3:12). In fact, all haters are murderers (1 John 3:15).

True Christians™ are destined to be persecuted:

1 John 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

We are martyrs ready to sacrifice ourself for others just like Jesus did for us (1 John 3:16). We love others with a True Love™, not just words (1 John 3:17-21).

That's why God does everything we ask Him:

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Again, the most important of commandments is loving one another (1 John 3:23-24).

Chapter 4

Beware of false prophets (1 John 4:1). Those who deny that Jesus was born in flesh are false prophets (1 John 4:2-3). However, their lies are so obvious even little children can see right past through them (1 John 4:4). The false prophets are of the world, and we are of God (1 John 4:5-6).

Just in case you forgot what is the main point that John is trying to make, it is that we have to love one another - because God loves us, too (1 John 4:7-12). With all that love, the Holy Spirit is among us (1 John 4:13). Believing in the Holy Trinity is the key (1 John 4:14-16). We are bold and unafraid in our love (1 John 4:17-18). We love God and each other because God wants us to do so (1 John 4:19-21).

Chapter 5

Once again: True Christians™ love God and one another (1 John 5: 1-3). By becoming Christian, we become to be perfect (1 John 5: 4-5). That happens through baptism and Jesus' blood (1 John 5:6). There is the Holy trinity in heaven, the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit (1 John 5:7), and there's another trinity on earth (spirit, water, and blood, 1 John 5:8). Believing that Jesus is Son of God is very important (1 John 5:9-13).

Once again, ask and God will provide:

1 John 5:14-15
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

We shall pray for the lesser sinners, but we should not waste our time praying for serious sinners:

1 John 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

Unrighteousness is sin (1 John 5:17). Again, True Christians™ cannot sin (1 John 5:18). We are right and everyone else is wrong:

1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

We know that Jesus is Son of God, so stay away from false idols (1 John 5:20-21).

John does not sign off, just ends the letter with a simple Amen.
