Re: Apostolic Church CULT!! -
05-02-2012, 01:24 AM
I just recently started attending an apostolic church. I am 17 and have went to a baptist church since I was 5. I started going with some friends and now go on my own. I just realized that all these years that I thought I was saved I wasn't, from the age of 8, and it hurts but I realize that I am lacking the spirit. These people have been nothing but loving, patient, and understanding with me. They let me realize it on my own in personal study, but would help if I had a question. The scripture that made me understand was Acts 19:1-6,
19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
When I read and understood this, after praying for months for god to lead me to truth and help me understand, I realize that I am like these. I have believed but I have never received the spirit. And they do believe in the trinity just baptism is in Jesus name not the trinity. I am still trying to grasp things because I don't want to let go yet, but I do know what they speak is truth.

You will note that when the Holy Ghost came on the apostles, they spoke in real languages. Not the nonsensical jibber-jabber the Apostolics spew forth in a flood of verbal diarrhea.
Google "glossolalia" for an understanding of the matter. So-called "ecstatic speech" occurs in many cults around the world; the Holy Spirit can't be doing it all, now can it?
By the way, we don't fondle snakes, either. First, it's a sin to tempt God. Second, they're awfully phallic, and we don't want any of our ex-gays to be tempted into backsliding.
Bible boring? Nonsense!

I dont seem to remember saying anything about snakes. And if you are talking about snake handling that isnt done in the apostolic church, or at least one that I have ever heard of. The only ones I have heard of that in is the Church of God, which is another branch of pentacostal but it isnt apostolic. Just like you have your divisions in baptists there are divisions in the pentacostal faith as well. And all that I know is what the Bible says which is all that matters, and it says that upon their salvation the holy ghost entered them and they began to speak with other tongues. There are languages out there all over the world that cant be wrote or translated, so how do you know if it is false.

So you make noises that you can't understand, and you assume that they are words in a rare language because we can't prove otherwise?
Why would God make people say things that neither they, nor the people around them, can understand? That would be a miracle in the same way that giving plastic fruit to a starving person would be a miracle.

Name one wholly undocumented human language which conveniently happens to be made up entirely of the sounds common to the "in tongues speaker's" native language.
Then explain how you know more about unknown languages than linguists.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossolalia
Quote:
In 1972, William J. Samarin, a linguist from the University of Toronto, published a thorough assessment of Pentecostal glossolalia that became a classic work on its linguistic characteristics.[6] His assessment was based on a large sample of glossolalia recorded in public and private Christian meetings in Italy, Holland, Jamaica, Canada and the USA over the course of five years; his wide range included the Puerto Ricans of the Bronx, the Snake Handlers of the Appalachians, and Russian Molokan in Los Angeles.
Samarin found that glossolalic speech does resemble human language in some respects. The speaker uses accent, rhythm, intonation and pauses to break up the speech into distinct units. Each unit is itself made up of syllables, the syllables being formed from consonants and vowels taken from a language known to the speaker: It is verbal behavior that consists of using a certain number of consonants and vowels[...]in a limited number of syllables that in turn are organized into larger units that are taken apart and rearranged pseudogrammatically[...]with variations in pitch, volume, speed and intensity.[7]
[Glossolalia] consists of strings of syllables, made up of sounds taken from all those that the speaker knows, put together more or less haphazardly but emerging nevertheless as word-like and sentence-like units because of realistic, language-like rhythm and melody.[8]
That the sounds are taken from the set of sounds already known to the speaker is confirmed by others. Felicitas Goodman, a psychological anthropologist and linguist, also found that the speech of glossolalists reflected the patterns of speech of the speaker's native language.[9]
Samarin found that the resemblance to human language was merely on the surface, and so concluded that glossolalia is "only a facade of language".[10] He reached this conclusion because the syllable string did not form words, the stream of speech was not internally organised, and– most importantly of all– there was no systematic relationship between units of speech and concepts. Humans use language to communicate, but glossolalia does not. Therefore he concluded that glossolalia is not "a specimen of human language because it is neither internally organized nor systematically related to the world man perceives".[10] On the basis of his linguistic analysis, Samarin defined Pentecostal glossolalia as "meaningless but phonologically structured human utterance, believed by the speaker to be a real language but bearing no systematic resemblance to any natural language, living or dead".[11]

And another reference for you:
Quote:
Boyd grew up in churches which treasured the “gift” of “speaking in tongues”, by which they mean a “private prayer language”. It was so normal in the cults he attended, that Boyd believed that everyone could jabber nonsensically nearly from birth.
Oh, wait. They can.
Like all of the subset of Christians who believe that spouting gibberish is a “gift from God”, Boyd has to distort Scripture to reach his conclusion that speaking in tongues is anything but nonsense. However, he goes out of his way to insist that he follows Scripture perfectly, with a straightforward, face-value approach to the Bible.Boyd asked the thousands in attendance to “let Scripture interpret Scripture” and approach the Bible as if they were reading it for the first time.
“I’m not going to stretch Scripture,” the New Life pastor emphasized.
Reading from Acts 2 in the New Testament, Boyd underscored the account that on the first day of the first church service, every one of the 120 people were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues.
“If I were reading the Bible for the very first time, as a young believer, and I was trying to make sense of this tongue thing, I think that would jump off the page at me and go ‘wow, if in the very first church service everyone there spoke in tongues when they were baptized in the Holy Spirit, it should be fairly common among us today,” said Boyd.
“I think that’s a safe assumption on all of our parts.”
I agree. If Boyd’s congregation were speaking in tongues the way it is described in Acts 2, that’d be quite something! But it’s not. And Boyd can’t help but know it:The senior pastor went on to point out the God-fearing Jews who recognized that their language was being spoken by people that didn’t know the Jews’ native language.
Speaking in tongues, Boyd said, could be used to communicate the Gospel to unbelievers. Thousands were born again that day when the Holy Spirit first came down upon believers. And Boyd said he knows tons of stories of such witnessing in tongues happening today.
Boyd’s congregation doesn’t have Coloradans suddenly speaking fluent Swahili or Russian. That’s the recorded “miracle” of Acts 2; the apostles spoke fluently in existing, real languages they did not know.

I will not sleep any less with your attacks, nor will i say things are not possible. Do you not believe that god is capable of impossible things? And I do qualify for linguistics and intelligence analist jobs in the Air Force which I am enlisted in. So go ahead and poke your fun, at least I have truth. And I havent spoke in tongues. I just sarted believing in it a couple of days ago, through prayer and study. I was like you and thought it non sense but God showed me the way.

Might want to work on your spelling if you're going to be a linguistics "analist".
Back to the subject, did you bother to read anything I shared with you on glossolalia?
The miracle in Acts was that the apostles spoke in real languages they didn't know, and were heard by people who spoke those languages. They did not jabber in some "heavenly language" which has no discernible meaning and is made up entirely of the sounds of the jabberer's native tongue.
Are you next going to say that you believe all the various cults worldwide (nominally Christian and otherwise) that jabber nonsensically are ALL being guided by the Holy Spirit?

Re: Apostolic Church CULT!! -

yes I did read it. I tell you I was skeptical and I also believed it was nonsense until around monday of this week. Until a couple months ago I had never really heard much of it, let alone wittnessed it, and at first I though it seemed cultish, until I started asking questions and truely trying to understand. I litterally emailed a preacher friend of mine saying that I was slightly frightend but something had drawn me to the church and that I wouldn't stop till I knew why I felt such a desire and a calling to be there. I recently realized that it was God and that I was there to learn. My friend at one point was worried because of what I told him that I had witnessed, but knew that I had to decide what to believe on my own. This is why I didn't come in here angry but rather to try to give a fresh view, the view from the otherside. A good conversation goes 2 ways.
