Default Day 41. Numbers 7-9 - 10-15-2007, 09:40 PM

Numbers 7-9

Today we get:

The first offerings
Presentation of the Levites
Another Passover
When to pick up camp

Numbers 7.

1 And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them;

2 That the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered:

It's finally all put together. Everything is anointed and sanctified. Time to get to worshiping!

3 And they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle.

These Moses divided up between Gershon and Merari, for the transporting of the tabernacle.

9 But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.

The Kohath had to carry it themselves.

11 And the LORD said unto Moses, They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for the dedicating of the altar.

You remember the guys we mentioned yesterday and on day 39. Those guys were the ones who brought the sacrifices/offerings for each of their tribes.

On each listed day, each tribe's prince brought forward a certain set of offerings.

1. Judah; Nahshon
2. Issachar; Nethaneel
3. Zebulon; Eliab
4. Reuben; Elizur
5. Simeon; Shelumiel
6. Gad; Eliasaph
7. Ephriam (Joseph); Elishama
8. Manasseh (Joseph); Gamaliel
9. Benjamin; Abidan
10. Dan; Ahiezer
11. Asher; Pagiel
12. Naphtali; Ahira

12 And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah:

13 And his offering was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:

14 One spoon of ten shekels of gold, full of incense:

15 One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:

16 One kid of the goats for a sin offering:

17 And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

Each prince for 12 days brought the same thing. FYI, a charger is a decorative plate.

Numbers 8.

6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.

How does one clean a Levite? Sprinkle some water on them, have them shave and wash their clothes.

Then, give a sin offering of a young bullock and fine flour.

10 And thou shalt bring the Levites before the LORD: and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites:

11And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD for an offering of the children of Israel, that they may execute the service of the LORD.

Their offering was symbolic, they weren't killed like the bullocks.

12 And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks: and thou shalt offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto the LORD, to make an atonement for the Levites.

Now, why it wasn't a 10% tithe of the Levites, that's not known. The Levites aren't 1/10th of the population, they aren't even 1/12th. They were the smallest tribe.

14 Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine.

God chose to take the Levites instead of the firstborn (like he requires of the herds.)

18 And I have taken the Levites for all the firstborn of the children of Israel.

That's better than taking all the firstborn, I guess.

19 And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make an atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come nigh unto the sanctuary.

So, Aaron and his two remaining children have the entire tribe of Levite males from age 25-50 to do the work. PRAISE JESUS!

Numbers 9

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

2 Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season.

God reminds Moses of what He just told him the other day about when to keep His feasts.

3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it.

Darn tootin you need to keep the Passover!

6 And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day:

How hard is it to not touch a dead body on one of the most holy days of the year?

So they go ask, and Moses goes and asks the LORD what to do.

10 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your posterity shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover unto the LORD.

A dead body is no reason not to keep passover.

13 But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the LORD in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.

A Jew who has no excuse to miss passover, and misses it, will be kicked out!

14 And if a stranger shall sojourn among you, and will keep the passover unto the LORD; according to the ordinance of the passover, and according to the manner thereof, so shall he do: ye shall have one ordinance, both for the stranger, and for him that was born in the land.

If a non-jew keeps passover, he must do it the same as the Hebe's.

Now, we learn when to move the tabernacle.

15 And on the day that the tabernacle was reared up the cloud covered the tabernacle, namely, the tent of the testimony: and at even there was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until the morning.

16 So it was alway: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.

When God wanted them to stay put, He'd leave the cloud over the tabernacle. When He wanted them to move He'd lift up the cloud and make them chase Him down.

18 At the commandment of the LORD the children of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of the LORD they pitched: as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they rested in their tents.

God didn't really care if it was day or night, when He wanted to move, He'd just up and lift his cloud, and make them chase.

21 And so it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed: whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.

Sometimes, He'd stay for a day or two, sometimes a week, month, or year. If He wanted to move, or sit still, He would. He's like that!

23 At the commandment of the LORD they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the LORD they journeyed: they kept the charge of the LORD, at the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

PRAISE HIS Wandering Nature!!!

So what have we learned today?

1. Again, we learned the name of the princes.

2. 12 chargers, 12 bowls, 12 spoons, 12 bullocks, 12 rams, 12 lambs, 12 kids, 24 more bullocks, 60 more rams, 60 he goats, 60 newborn lambs; this was the 12 day offering!

3. When God wants you to move, He'll just pick up his cloud and go where He feels!

Well, at least they didn't have to wonder if it was God's will to go somewhere.
