Default Day 352: James 1-3 - 12-12-2016, 08:47 PM

Chapter 1
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

James wants everyone to know this is a continuation of the faith of the Chosen People of God, not some new, johnny-come-lately man-made religion plucked out of the imagination of some delusional but charismatic fool seeing and hearing things that aren’t really there.

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

Christians have always been persecuted, and we shouldn’t be surprised. From the Gay Agenda to the War on Christmas, we can expect persecution. If you need to know what to do, just ask God and He promises to give you all the wisdom you need (James 1:3-5).

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

This promise only applies to Christians who ask in True Faith; any doubt will invalidate the promise, and God will ignore that person’s plea (James 1:7-8).

11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

It doesn’t matter if your life is comfortable or you’re hanging on by a thread, it’ll all be over soon enough (James 1:9-11).

13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

God never tempts the True Believer. Not to be confused with God sending a spirit of delusion to confuse the unbeliever. That He does, and that’s okay (2 Thessalonians 2:11).

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

When good things happen, it’s because of God. When bad things happen, it’s because of man.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Don’t just read the Word of God, put it into action if you want God’s Blessings (including Salvation). Don’t fool yourself into thinking that being a good person will impress God. Any schmuck can read the bible. Any idiot can convince themselves they know what’s going on. God cares only that you obey, which you will do with gladness if you truly believe. Then your actions will be blessed (James 1:19-27).

Chapter 2
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

This doesn’t mean don’t respect people, but don’t judge them by virtue of how important they are in society. In God’s Kingdom, everyone is important. So the real division here isn’t wealth or social standing, it’s faith (James 2:2-4).

5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Don’t discriminate based on someone’s social standing, wealth, influence, education, gender, sexual orientation, or anything irrelevant like that, but on his faith (James 2:5-9).

10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

If you don’t have the right heart, you’ll fail at obedience. True Christians don’t disappoint God, and so don’t have to worry about being judged (James 2:11-13).

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

The question is rhetorical. Paul tells us that yes, God’s mercy works through the faith of a man and nothing more (Romans 3:27-28), and James reminds that yes, God’s mercy requires our good works and nothing less (James 2:15-18). The bible doesn't tell us how two diametrically opposing truths can both be true, but it's not our job to ask questions about how God's reality works (Isaiah 55:8-9), just to know our place in it (Proverbs 3:5-6) .

19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Anyone can believe in God. Even the demons do and they’re not getting any golden ticket to heaven. God doesn’t care about whether or not you believe, He cares about whether or not you put that belief to work.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Drawing on Paul’s example of Abraham, James points out this isn’t some supernatural mathematical equation to earn blessings. This isn’t scientology. The point is God’s mercy requires nothing more than faith (Romans 4:2-3). And also works (James 2:22-26). And sometimes a stubborn spirit and brain waves that can tap into His voice (Acts 9:4).

Chapter 3
1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Most people give offense in one way or another by virtue of what they say or what they do. Just like we use bridles on big, dumb horses and steer them through bits in their mouths to do our will, God steers us through our mouths. But our bridle is made of spirit, not metal. Few people are able to be perfect in both word and deed, in both intent and action (James 3:1-13). Glory!

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

Jealousy, bitterness, strife, and confusion are the result of trusting man’s logic and not God’s Word, whereas Christians are peaceful, gentle, and produce all good fruits without a lick of hypocrisy (James 3:15-18).
